Ascot 03/04/2016 – Adrien Du Pont can defy top weight
The 2.35 at Ascot on Sunday is the £40,000 Coutts Juvenile Handicap Hurdle over two miles.
Adrien Du Pont tops Ascot weights for Paul Nicholls
The race is restricted to four-year-olds with top weight of 11st 12lbs set to be carried by Adrien Du Pont. The French-bred gelding was awarded the race at Chepstow in October after being beaten in a photograph by Sceau Royal. He received a hefty bump close home which was deemed to have cost him victory.
Sceau Royal proved too strong for Adrien Du Pont at Cheltenham next time, quickening clear on the run-in to win by a length and three-quarters. Paul Nicholls then sent Adrien Du Pont back to Chepstow for the Grade 1 Future Champions Novices’ Hurdle where he beat Chic Name.
Neil Mulholland saddles Pinkie Brown, a winner in heavy ground at Wetherby in January. He was heavily backed that day on his first run for the stable and had decent form in France. He finished runner-up to multiple winner Leoncavallo last September.
St Saviour beat Berland by two and a quarter lengths at Ludlow in February and the pair are set to clash again here. St Saviour faded tamely at Kempton next time while Berland enjoys a 5lbs pull in the weights for John Ferguson.
Bridget Andrews aboard Ashoka at Ascot
Dan Skelton’s Ashoka looked a useful recruit when winning on his debut for the stable at Warwick in December. He came through strongly in the closing stages to beat For Goodness Sake by two and three-quarter lengths. He was well beaten by Gibralfaro at Kempton in December before chasing home Tommy Silver at Musselburgh. Bridget Andrews takes the ride on Ashoka and can claim 5lbs.
Alan King relies on Oceane, a gelding by Kentucky Dynamite out of Zahrana by Zamindar. He won early-season hurdles at Fontwell and Kempton before struggling in better class races at Cheltenham and Kempton.
Lizzie Kelly partners Swincombe Toby for Nick Williams, a gelding by Tobougg out of a Sulaafah mare. He is yet to score in three races in the UK, most recently finishing a remote third to Gibralfaro here at Ascot in January. Gary Moore’s La Paimpolaise looks the pick of the remainder, a filly by Linda’s Lad out of Medievale by Lost World. She made a satisfactory UK debut when third at Exeter behind Culture De Sivola last month.
