Ascot Stakes Preview and Betting Tips – Royal Ascot 20/06/2017

The 5.00 race at Royal Ascot on Tuesday is the £80,000 Ascot Stakes over two and a half miles.

Mullins books Ryan Moore for Ascot Stakes

It is one of the longest races on the flat racing calendar and is regularly won by National Hunt yards. Willie Mullins is represented by Thomas Hobson, the early favourite despite an absence of nearly four years on the flat.

The seven-year-old won four of his seven starts on the level when trained by John Gosden. He was sold to the Ricci family to go hurdling and has won four times over timber. His most notable success came in a Grade 2 hurdle at Warwick last year.

Thomas Hobson subsequently lost his form before winning over two miles at Fairyhouse in April. He then finished fifth in a valuable hurdle at Punchestown. The booking of Ryan Moore has alerted bookmakers to his chances.

Who Dares Wins on target for Ascot Stakes

Alan King saddles three runners led by Who Dares Wins, a five-year-old son of Jeremy. He also enjoyed a successful season over hurdles, winning the Gerry Feilden Hurdle at Newbury. He also ran a good race when third at the Cheltenham Festival in the Coral Cup. Who Dares Wins was fancied for the Chester Cup last month where he finished strongly in fourth place.

Stable companion Oceane also has a chance after finishing second at Ascot last month. He likes good to firm ground and was third in a similar race at Goodwood last summer. Fergus Sweeney has been booked for Oceane with Tom Marquand aboard Who Dares Wins. The third member of the King team is Rainbow Dreamer, a workmanlike winner at Newbury in April and the mount of Andrea Atzeni.

Star Rider ran well for a long way in last season’s Cesarewitch Handicap. She has lost her way since and was well beaten at Newbury last time. Nicky Henderson has a good record in this race and bookmakers are taking no chances with Beyond Conceit. He has not raced on the flat for three seasons but has been in good form over hurdles. Beyond Conceit was second at Aintree in a first-time hood in April so will lack nothing in terms of fitness.
