Aurie’s Star Handicap Preview – Flemington 12/08/2017
Bookmakers are struggling to establish a clear favourite for Saturday’s Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap at Flemington.
Hey Doc carries top weight at Flemington
Five of the ten runners are priced within one point of one another in Ladbrokes early betting. Flippant just about has the honour of being favourite at 5.50. Ben Melham rides the five-year-old mare who has won five of her seventeen races. She is trained by Peter and Paul Snowden at Randwick and has been racing consistently.
Guineas winner Hey Doc has to concede weight all round but usually runs well fresh. He resumed with a credible third in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes over 1200m. The son of Duporth won the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes over 1400m before storming to victory in the Group 1 Australian Guineas. He was below his best in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile and finished sixth in The Goodwood.
I Am A Star is also a Group 1 winner but has drifted out from 4.60 to 6.50 in the betting market. The daughter of I Am Invincible became the first three-year-old to win Group 1 Myer Classic last spring. She resumed to finish second in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes over 1100m. A disappointing run in the Group 1 The Galaxy was followed by back-to-back wins in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes and Group 2 Sunline Stakes. She stayed on strongly in third after a rough race in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes last time. Dwayne Dunn takes the ride for Mornington trainer Shane Nichols.
Cannyescent chases four-timer in Aurie’s Star
Grande Rosso is also in the group of horses vying for favouritism. He is trained by the Hayes and Danernig team and will break from barrier nine on Saturday. He is a gelding by Written Tycoon and Regan Bayliss will be on board. He has gone well fresh in the past and has been backed from 10.0 into 6.0.
Stable companion Cannyescent is a five-year-old gelding by Canny Lad out of Juicy. Damian Oliver has the ride on this one who has to overcome a wide draw in barrier ten. He needs to improve to win at this level.
We’ve Got This is perfectly drawn in barrier 2 but has gone the other way in the market, out to 9.0. He won the Hong Kong Jockey Club over 1200m and finished third in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality over the same trip. His best performance was probably his second in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes at Flemington.
