Autumn Stakes Preview and Betting Tips – Newmarket 14/10/2017
The 2.25 at Newmarket on Saturday is the Group 3 Autumn Stakes for two-year-olds over a mile.
Godolphin chasing back-to-back Autumn Stakes wins
The Autumn Stakes was won by Nashwan in 1988 and subsequent top class winners include Nayef (2000) and Kingston Hill (2013). Godolphin won the race last year with Best Solution and bid for a repeat win with Ghaiyyath.
He is a son of Dubawi out of a mare by Galileo and made a promising debut when third to Blue Laureate at Doncaster. Ghaiyyath stepped up on that effort to beat a large field of maidens at Newmarket, powering five lengths clear of Proschema. He wore a hood that day and retains the headgear in the Autumn Stakes.
John Gosden saddles Purser, a nine lengths winner of a Lingfield novice stakes last time. He was a narrow winner of a Newbury maiden on his debut before finishing fourth in a Group 3 at Sandown. The son of Mizzen Mast was slightly disappointing at the Esher Track but seemed happier when front-running tactics were adopted at Lingfield.
O’Brien saddles two in Autumn Stakes
Arbalet represents Hugo Palmer with Adam Kirby in the saddle. The son of Dark Angel also ran in that Sandown race, finishing virtually upsides Purser in third. He came from off the pace having previously won a Redcar maiden.
Mark Johnston’s Dream Today won the valuable Convivial Maiden Stakes at York on his debut. The form was boosted by runner-up Gabr next time but it may not have been the strongest renewal. The Dream Ahead colt faded tamely when stepped up to Group 2 company for the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster.
Aidan O’Brien has never won the Autumn Stakes but has two realistic chances here with Flag Of Honour and Zabriskie. Flag Of Honour is by Galileo out of a Warning mare and won easily at Naas last time out. He never really saw daylight on his debut run at the same track. He holds a Derby entry next season so it would be risky to leave him out of calculations.
Zabriskie is a son of Frankel out of a Nureyev mare and has an almost identical profile. He never featured on his debut at the Curragh before winning narrowly at Tipperary. It is interesting that Ryan Moore sides with Zabriskie over his stable companion, a Racing Post Trophy and Derby entry.
