Badger Ales Trophy Handicap Chase Preview – Wincanton 11/11/2017

The big betting race at Wincanton on Saturday is the £60,000 Badger Ales Trophy Handicap Chase.

9-1 the field in Badger Ales Trophy

The race has attracted a big field of eighteen runners and bookmakers are struggling to establish a clear favourite. Six horses are currently priced within one point with odds of 9-1 freely available.

Venetia Williams trains two of those six with Yala Enki and Vic De Touzaine. Yala Enki is a seven-year-old gelding by Nickname who ended last season on a winning note at Kelso. He also landed a gamble when successful at Haydock Park in December. Both races were in very testing conditions and he looks unlikely to have his favoured ground at Wincanton.

Vic De Touzaine is a grey gelding by Dom Alco and also won his last race. That was at Carlisle last month when beating Boric by a nose. He was all out to hang on that day and carries a 7lbs penalty in the Badger Ales Trophy.

Henllan Harri sprang a 40-1 surprise when beating Vyta Du Roc in the Bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown in April. He made a pleasing seasonal reappearance when a close third to Scoop The Pot at Worcester last month.

Bryony Frost aboard Present Man

Present Man won at Kempton recently for Paul Nicholls. He had been pulled up at Sandown behind Henllan Harri but that came at the end of a long season. He has won at Wincanton in the past and Bryony Frost retains the ride on Saturday.

Stable companion Mr Mix will be ridden by Harry Cobden, successful on the gelding here last time out. He stayed on well to beat Forgotten Gold by two and a quarter lengths. He was slightly disappointing over hurdles but seems a natural over fences.

Southfield Royale has not raced since being well beaten in the Scottish National in April. He showed only glimpses of his best form last season, failing to reward market support.

Punters will have to watch their bets with Southfield Theatre also in the field. He fell at the last fence in the Badger Ales last year when looking a likely winner. He has only raced once since and this looks a much stronger renewal. Fletchers Flyer was last seen being pulled up in the Irish Grand National in April and probably needs further.
