Celtic v PSG Champions League Preview 12/09/2017
Celtic look to have an impossible task in Group B of the Champions League this season.
The runaway Scottish Champions rarely get a chance to test their mettle against better quality opposition. They will certainly be tested by the big spending PSG who play in Glasgow on Tuesday night.
The group is completed by Anderlecht and Bayern Munich. Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers reports that Leigh Griffiths is available for Tuesday's game after missing the 4-1 win over Hamilton last Friday. Odsonne Edouard stood in for Griffiths and scored the fourth goal. Moussa Dembele, Dedryck Boyata and Erik Sviatchenko are all missing on Tuesday.
Celtic will take a crumb of comfort from holding Manchester City to a 3-3 draw last season. That match brought Guardiola’s honeymoon period of ten successive wins to a shuddering halt. The Scottish side opened with a 7-0 thrashing in Barcelona last season which left them fighting to restore their pride. This they did, not only against City at home but also away and at Borussia Monchengladbach. Rodgers will also look to the fans to get right behind the underdogs and give PSG a hostile reception.
The visitors fired a warning to Celtic with a 5-1 win at Metz last weekend. Big money signings Kylian Mbappe and Neymar both found the target along with Edinson Cavani (2). Rodgers has been lavish in his praise of the PSG line-up but insists that his side will not be intimidated.
World record-breaking signing Neymar is no stranger to Celtic Park having played for Barcelona in a 2-0 win last season. The prospect of Neymar lining up alongside Mbappe and Cavani is a daunting one for the home side. Celtic’s only possible chance is to match the visitors for energy and endeavour. Rodgers has already hinted at a physical edge to the game on Tuesday.
PSG are 1.25 to take all three points with a draw at a top priced 7.0. Celtic can be backed as high as 14.0 to stun the French side and grab an unlikely victory. The visitors are only 2.5 to win by three or more goals. It may be worth having a small bet on a 1-3 outcome while a score/win double on Mbappe and PSG looks tempting at 2.10.
