Christmas Classic Preview and Betting Tips – Royal Randwick 30/12/2017
The feature race at Royal Randwick on Saturday is the Listed $150,000 Christmas Classic over 1200m.
Music Magnate tops the betting in Christmas Classic
The market leader is Bjorn Baker’s Group 1 winner Music Magnate, the mount of Blake Shinn. The top weight faces a maximum of eleven rivals on Saturday and has been drawn wide in barrier ten.
Music Magnate is a son of Written Tycoon and has won eight of his nineteen career starts. His career earnings are already through the $1million barrier, helped by his victory in the Doomben 10,000. This will be his first run at Randwick since finishing fifth on a heavy track in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes in March..
He won the Group 2 Victory Stakes in late April before trailing the tails when attempting a repeat win in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000. He also ran a lack-lustre race when last of all in the Group 1 Kingsford-Smith Cup. Baker declared himself to be very happy with Music Magnate following a recent trial victory.
Eckstein the main danger to Classic favourite
Second favourite for the Christmas Classic is the Kurt Goldman-trained Eckstein. The four-year-old daughter of I Am Invincible has won five of her fifteen career starts and is 4/4 at the distance.
The mare’s last victory came in Eagle Farm’s Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes towards the end of May. Eckstein is also dropped in grade after her finishing a close second behind Shoals at Flemington in the Group 1 Myer Classic. She was rated a 31.0 outsider that day but is currently trading at around 4.8 for the Christmas Classic.
Kuro has drawn the inside rile for John O’Shea with Tye Angland booked for the ride. The six-year-old son of Denman was third to Zestful in the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap over 1200m at Randwick a fortnight ago. Kuro drops 1.5kg in the weights but has eased from an early 7.0 to 8.5 in the betting.
Snippets Land will be partnered Glyn Schofield for the Peter and Paul Snowden yard. The seven-year-old finished a close fifth in the Razor Sharp recently but has to overcome a wide draw in barrier eleven. Le Cordon Bleu does not have very inspiring recent form figures but could bounce back to form from barrier two.
