Coventry Stakes Preview and Betting Tips – Royal Ascot 20/06/2017

The 3.05 at Royal Ascot on Tuesday is the £150,000 Group 2 Coventry Stakes for two-year-old colts and geldings.

No clear favourite for Coventry Stakes

Bookmakers are struggling to establish a clear market leader with five horses priced within a point of each other. There has not really been an outstanding juvenile performance so far this season so there is little form to go on.

Richard Hannon has two lively contenders in De Bruyne Horse and Denaar, the winners of four races between them. De Bruyne Horse beat Cardsharp by two lengths in the Woodcote Stakes at the Epsom Derby meeting. Denaar won over five furlongs on his debut at Chelmsford last month. He followed up over six furlongs in soft ground at Newbury when beating Starlight Mystery by three-quarters of a length.

With such an open betting market, you have to respect the chances of American raider Arawak. Wesley Ward knows how to get a juvenile ready for Royal Ascot and the son of Uncle Mo won by seven lengths on his only start.

O’Brien relies on Murillo in Coventry

Aidan O’Brien has opted to run Murillo in the Coventry in preference to Declarationofpeace. Murillo is a colt by Scat Daddy out of a Rahy mare. He finished last on his debut but won comfortably in a minor race at Tipperary next time. Most of the fancied horses are drawn high in the Coventry which could make it difficult for Murillo from stall four.

Jessica Harrington saddles Brother Bear, a three lengths winner of a Listed race at the Curragh. He overcame a slow start to win on his debut on good to firm ground at Leopardstown on his previous start.

Richard Spencer saddles Rajasinghe, an impressive winner on the all-weather at Newcastle. Charles Hills could be doubly represented in the Coventry by Red Roman and Nebo. Red Roman improved considerably from his debut to win at Newmarket last month.

Nebo beat Westerland when sent off at 25-1 on his debut at Newbury. The runner-up only scrambled home next time at Leicester but Nebo beat him with plenty to spare. Champion jockey Jim Crowley rides Nebo with Christophe Soumillon aboard Red Roman.
