Crystal Palace v Manchester City Premier League Preview 31/12/2017
Runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City will bid for a remarkable nineteenth consecutive victory at Crystal Palace on Sunday.
A relatively comfortable 1-0 win at Newcastle on Wednesday night extended their lead to 15 points over local rivals United.
It has already been generally accepted that City will be Champions this season. Their pursuers have not been given even a glimmer of hope of catching them. Pep Guardiola has been able to rotate his powerful squad through the busy festive period without dropping a point. They have been taken to the brink several times but have always managed to find a winner.
A 1-0 win at Newcastle was achieved with the minimum of fuss. Raheem Sterling scored the winner while Sergio Aguero missed several chances to double their lead. Central defender John Stones is close to a recall following a long-term injury. The two sides met at the Etihad Stadium in September with City winning 5-0. Sane, Sterling (2), Aguero and Delph provided the goals. Palace are a much better side now, as they showed by pushing Arsenal all the way in a 3-2 defeat on Thursday.
City have seven matches lined up in January including a two-legged EFL Cup semi-final against Bristol City. They are at home for their next three fixtures before travelling to Anfield on 14th January.
Roy Hodgson has done well to haul Palace out of the relegation zone but they are still far from being safe. The Arsenal defeat left them just one point above the drop zone in eighteenth place. It was their first defeat since losing 1-0 to Tottenham on November 5th.
A 3-0 win over Leicester City was their best performance of the month with goals from Benteke, Zaha and Sako. They, along with Loftus-Cheek and Townsend, give Hodgson plenty of attacking options. Despite their perilous position, very few pundits believe that Palace will be relegated this season. The atmosphere has changed completely at Selhurst Park and they believe they can give anyone a game at present.
They have already beaten Chelsea this season and are rated 13.0 to end City’s year with a rare defeat. City are 1.20 favourites with the draw priced at 6.0. It may pay to go high in the goals market for this game but City should extend their winning run.
