Dewhurst Stakes Preview and Betting Tips – Newmarket 14/10/2017
Two-year-old trial races in the UK don’t come any bigger than the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.
Dewhurst the race of Champions
The history of the race is littered with future champions. Grundy (1974), Wollow (1975), The Minstrel (1976), El Gran Senor (1983) and Generous (1990) all went on to taste Classic success. The remarkable standard has been maintained with the likes of Zafonic (1992), Pennekamp (1994), Shamardal (2004), New Approach (2007) and Frankel (2010) adding their names to the roll of honour. Churchill won the race last year for Aidan O’Brien and went on to win both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas.
Expert Eye is the horse set the carry the burden of expectation on Saturday. Sir Michael Stoute’s colt put up arguably the most impressive juvenile performance of the season at Goodwood. He powered into the lead over two furlongs from home to beat Zaman by four and a half lengths. Left trailing in his wake were subsequent Group race winners James Garfield and Seahenge.
That race was at the beginning of August and Stoute has not been able to get him back on track since. Recent reports suggest that he is in fine fettle for his biggest test to date and Andrea Atzeni retains the ride.
O’Brien quartet face Expert Eye
Aidan O’Brien has won the race five times including three times in the last four seasons. He saddles four runners this time, led by US Navy Flag. He won the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket last month. It was his ninth race of the season and this will be his first run over seven furlongs.
Seahenge was eight lengths behind Expert Eye at Goodwood so has a lot to do to turn the tables. O’Brien felt that he ran very green that day and looked a much better horse when taking the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster.
Perhaps the biggest danger to the favourite will come from Emaraaty. John Gosden has a high opinion of the Dubawi colt who is out of Zee Zee Top by Zafonic. A promising fourth at Sandown was followed by an emphatic success at Newbury. He simply powered his rivals into the ground that day and is likely to be up with the pace from the outset.
