Douvan withdrawn from Tingle Creek – Sandown 09/12/2017
The feature race at Sandown Park on Saturday is the £150,000 Betfair Tingle Creek Chase over two miles.
Fox Norton favourite for Tingle Creek
The short-priced favourite is Colin Tizzard’s Fox Norton, runner-up in the Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. He just failed to catch Special Tiara that day with the long odds-on favourite Douvan well beaten.
Fox Norton has won all three subsequent starts, most recently beating Cloudy Dream by eight lengths at Cheltenham. He looks a natural contender for the Champion Chase again this season and showed his class when winning at Punchestown. Fox Norton got the better of Ryanair Chase winner Un De Sceaux by a length and three-quarters.
His task has been made a lot easier by the late withdrawal of Douvan, the big disappointment of the Cheltenham Festival. He started the shortest price favourite of the week but appeared to injure himself at the third fence. This would have been his first run since but he failed to please his trainer in his last piece of work. Trainer Willie Mullins brought back 2015 Champion Hurdler Faugheen to win after a lengthy absence. It would be no surprise to see Douvan return to his best in the near future.
Politologue bids to give Nicholls tenth win
Paul Nicholls has dominated the Tingle Creek with nine wins. He bids for a tenth success with the flying grey Politologue. The six-year-old son of Poliglote beat stable companion San Benedeto at Exeter last month. He had previously fallen at the last fence at Aintree in April, leaving San Benedeto to claim the spoils. Politologue has always been an exciting prospect and it will be interesting to see him compete at Grade 1 level.
Special Tiara is the reigning Champion chaser, trained by Henry De Bromhead in Ireland. He was a game winner at the Festival on his favoured good ground but was also an absentee at the final declaration stage.
The late withdrawals meant that only four were originally declared on Thursday morning. The race was reopened and seven runners will now go to post. Kim Bailey has elected to run unlucky Arkle Chase faller Charbel who should be fit after a recent run over hurdles. Ar Mad, Ordinary World and Ar Mad complete the line-up.
