Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Dash Preview – Ascot 12/08/2017

Jockeys take centre stage at Ascot on Saturday for the Shergar Cup with four teams battling over six races.

McEvoy has winning chance on Lexington Abbey

The action begins at 1.05 with the Shergar Cup Dash over five furlongs.  Pipers Note is the early favourite for Ruth Carr, the winner of ten of his 43 races. Carr has expressed concern over the ground at Ascot as she does not want it too soft for the seven-year-old. Pipers Note was third here last month behind Danzeno on good ground and will be ridden by Neil Callan.

Kerrin McEvoy is riding for the Rest of the World team and has a leading chance here on Lexington Abbey. Kevin Ryan’s six-year-old was just behind Pipers Note last time in fourth place. That followed two fine placed efforts at Musselburgh and Newcastle. Lexington Abbey has won in testing ground  and should give McEvoy a good ride.

Fran Berry rides top weight Mirza for Rae Guest. The veteran sprinter has won 11 of his 59 races and has been running creditably this season. He was not far behind Lexington Abbey when fifth at Newcastle. He then chased home the speedy Battaash at Sandown in a Group 3. That run entitles him to go close here and he is a previous winner in soft ground.

Green Door returning to form ahead of Shergar Cup

Tropics is also into the veteran stage for Dean Ivory. The eight-year-old ran the race of his life when second in the 2015 Group 1 July Cup. He has struggled to reproduce that form since and was beaten five lengths into fourth at Newmarket last time. Emma-Jayne Wilson has the task of getting the best out of Tropics.

Green Door ran a good race at Goodwood recently when third to El Astronaute. He had finished in midfield in Danzeno’s race and could be on the way back to form. Green Door won in soft ground at Newmarket in June when beating Lucky Beggar by two and three-quarter lengths. Umberto Rispoli has the ride on him and will break from stall four.

Willytheconqueror is difficult to fancy on recent form. He looks held by Mirza on Sandown form while Sir Robert Cheval was only seventh in a Listed race last time. He had run respectably on his previous outing when sixth to Acapulco at the Curragh.
