The Everest Preview and Betting Tips – Randwick 14/10/2017
Randwick stages the inaugural running of the $10 million The Everest on Saturday. It becomes the richest race ever staged in Australia, surpassing the $6.2 million Melbourne Cup at Flemington.
Record $10 million prize money for The Everest
It also becomes the richest turf race anywhere in the world. It will be fascinating to see whether the race captures the imagination of the public. The Australian racing scene revolves around the Melbourne Cup with the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate also attracting widespread interest. Great horses such as Black Caviar and Winx help to promote the sport and there is great anticipation ahead of Saturday’s race.
The Everest is a weight-for-age sprint with entries charged at $600,000 per horse. It is worth $6million more than Randwick’s most valuable prize, the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes in April. The race falls on the same day as a high class card at Caulfield featuring the Caulfield Guineas, one of four Group 1 events. Although the race has attracted the cream of Australian sprinting, it has not managed to reel in a top flight European runner.
The winning owner will walk away with $5.8 million with $2.4 million going to the runner-up. Third-placed money is $800,000 with $175,000 recouped by the last of the twelve finishers. While the race lacks International interest, it does contain seven Group 1 winners.
She Will Reign favourite for The Everest
Moir Stakes winner She Will Reign is currently favourite at 4.80 with Ladbrokes having drawn nicely in barrier two. She won the Golden Slipper as a juvenile and reappeared to win over five furlongs at Moonee Valley. She Will Reign is more effective over six furlongs and she looks a worthy favourite off her light weight.
Craig Williams rides Vega Magic won the Group 1 Memsie Stakes over 1400m and has been the best backed horse in recent days. Three times TJ Smith Stakes winner Chautauqua is certain to attract plenty of support. The popular grey can leave himself a lot to do from the gate but barrier five is about as good as connections could have hoped.
Others prominent in the betting include prolific winner Redzel along with the improving Redkirk Warrior and Deploy. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained English is also expected to run well after a narrow defeat in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes.
