Francois Calmels targets home win in Najeti Open

The US Open will understandably make the golfing headlines this week but the European Challenge Tour stages the Najeti Open, formerly known as the St Omer Open. The event takes place at Saint Omer Golf Club in France and, as you would expect this week, big names are notable by their absence.

Jordi Garcia Pinto

The defending champion is Jordi Garcia Pinto of Spain who beat countryman Carlos Aguilar by three strokes last year. Lorenzo Gagli of Italy was tied for third with a host of players including Scotland’s Henry Scott and Chilean Mark Tullo. The latter has only made one cut in his last nine appearances while Pinto has only fared marginally better.

Carlos Aguilar has not exactly been shooting the lights out either with his last three events reading T59, T54 and T50. However, there have been small signs of a revival in his fortunes and that is sufficient to warrant support at a massive 176.0.

Henry Scott has a similar profile having ended a miserable run of five missed cuts at the Nordea Masters. He also made the cut at the Lyoness Open but his game may not be quite ready to push for a top five finish just yet.

Gary Boyd

One player who is definitely in form is England’s Gary Boyd, runner-up in the Swiss Challenge and tied for fifth last week in the KPMG Trophy. A third round 75 blotted his copybook there, otherwise he would have been challenging Scotland’s James McLeary for the title. The winner is attractively priced at around 56.0 for back-to-back victories but another player to take from that event is Francois Calmels of France.

He opened with a 75 but fired rounds of 68, 71 and a closing 66 to finish in eighth position. That was a big improvement on his previous form and he could be a contender this week. His recent form would look quite tidy but for a disastrous 81 in the final round of the Made In Denmark Challenge.

Taco Remkes of the Netherlands was only a shot behind McLeary last week, putting together three rounds of 67. A third round 75 cost him the title but he will have been greatly encouraged by his overall performance.
