Herbert Power Stakes Preview – Caulfield 14/10/2017

Race 4 at Caulfield on Saturday is the $400,000 Group 2 Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes over 2400m.

Hugo Palmer runs Cup hope Wall Of Fire

The early betting suggests that the Herbert Power will go to Lloyd Williams with either Foundry or Aloft. The former Aidan O’Brien trained Aloft has eased slightly to 4.20 from 3.70 this week after being drawn out wide in barrier ten.

The son of Galileo is one of three runners for Robert Hickmott who has also declared Gallante, drawn widest of all in eleven. Aloft finished a creditable third behind stable companion Almandin in the Listed JRA Trophy over 2500m last month.

Foundry is priced at 5.50 after winning Sydney’s Group 1 The Metropolitan over this distance. Foundry has 5.5kg more to carry on Saturday and will be ridden by Michael Dee. He also moved from Ballydoyle but his Randwick success was only the second from thirteen career starts. He finished fifth in the English St Leger way back in 2013. Gallante finished last of fifteen behind Harlem in the  Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) and Foundry.

Kidmenever represents Godolphin in Herbert Power

Charlie Appleby enjoyed great success down under last year and is represented here by Kidmenever. The four-year-old son of Baltic King has been running well in Europe, notably when third at Royal Ascot in June. He then chased home Cambridgeshire Handicap winner Spark Plug in a Listed race at Sandown. Both races were over shorter distances but he was successful over this trip last year.

Aussiebet tipped Wall Of Fire at long odds for this year’s Melbourne Cup. Hugo Palmer sends the Canford Cliffs colt to Caulfield where he has to concede weight to each of his rivals. He was a progressive staying handicapper last year, winning at York and Doncaster.

Mark Zahra rides him for the first time on Saturday and will break from barrier nine. Wall Of Fire last ran in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury and finished second to Defoe. This trip is short of his best but connections will be hoping to see him staying on strongly at the finish. Darren Weir’s Gallic Chieftain should improve after a promising sixth behind Jon Snow in Moonee Valley’s Group 3 JRA Cup.
