Huddersfield Town v Burnley Premier League Preview 30/12/2017
Burnley were cruelly denied a famous victory at Old Trafford on Boxing Day by a late leveller.
The high-flying Clarets had raced into a shock 2-0 lead but were guilty of sitting back with a famous victory within their grasp. Even so, it was a fine result for a side that were easy prey on their travels last season.
They had briefly held sixth place above Arsenal before normality was restored. It will be a huge surprise if any side can challenge the supremacy of the “big six” this season. Europa League qualification remains a possibility for Sean Dyche’s side. They travel to Huddersfield Town on Saturday, a team with a very similar success story.
Burnley suffered a rare blip when folding tamely in a 3-0 home defeat by Tottenham. It was to their credit that they hit back so strongly at Old Trafford. The secret for the Clarets this season has been their stoic defending. Only 17 goals have been conceded in their first twenty matches. Only the two Manchester clubs and Chelsea can boast a better record at present. They have only scored eighteen times, the same as Huddersfield.
The Terriers, rather like Burnley, do not have anything like the resources of the top clubs. Many pundits felt they would go straight back down but they are holding their own in the Premiership. Huddersfield start this match in eleventh place with 23 points.
Their ambition is simply to preserve their EPL status and they are on course to achieve that. They will view this game as one in which they can take at least a point. Chelsea were worthy 3-1 winners here earlier in the month but Town bounced back with a 4-1 win at Watford. They have drawn their last two matches 1-1 against Southampton and Stoke City.
Tom Ince gave them the lead against the Potters but they were pegged back on the hour by Sobhi. Both sides had chances to take all three points but a draw was probably a fair result. The two sides are closely matched in the betting. Huddersfield at 2.6 with Burnley 3.20 to take all three points. The draw is a top priced 3.25. The Clarets may have taken encouragement from their performance at Old Trafford and could be the value bet.
