Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes Preview and Betting Tips 14/10/2017
Bonneval and Hartnell clash in Saturday’s $3million Group 1 Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes over 2000m.
Bonneval favourite for Caulfield Stakes
Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman train Bonneval who defeated Hartnell by a length in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes last time out. The New Zealand-trained mare is favourite with the sponsors at 3.0 with old rival Hartnell next best at 3.40.
The race has attracted a field of eleven with Bonneval drawn widest of all. The winner of the New Zealand and ATC Oaks will be partnered by Damian Lane. He was aboard the filly in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes last month. Her Underwood Stakes win was her sixth on the bounce with Hugh Bowman doing the steering. The Caulfield Cup is her next objective, a race Baker won in 2015 with Mongolian Khan. That horse had finished third in the Caulfield Stakes on his previous outing.
If Bonneval is successful on Saturday, she will join Winx (2016) and Atlantic Jewel (2013) as the only winning fillies in the last thirty years. The last horse to successfully follow up the Underwood Stakes by winning here was Ocean Park in 2012, also trained in New Zealand.
Jon Snow on trial for Melbourne Cup
The stable also run their Melbourne Cup nominated four-year-old Jon Snow, the winner of the Group 3 JRA Cup at Moonee Valley. He was also successful in the Group 1 ATC Derby over 2400m and breaks from barrier nine under Stephen Baster.
Baker and Forsman will look no further than the Godolphin-owned Hartnell as the chief danger. The multiple Group 1 winner has a choice of either the Caulfield Cup or the Cox Plate. He took the latter option in 2016 and finished a remote second to the brilliant Winx. With the super mare on course to make it a hat-trick this month, the Caulfield Cup must be under serious consideration.
The son of Authorized has been a fine servant to Godolphin since being transferred from Mark Johnston’s European yard. He was impressive first up and connections are hopeful that his stamina will enable him to reverse Underwood Stakes form. He has won four of his eleven starts at this trip.
The race also has added European interest. Johannes Vermeer and The Taj Mahal represent Aidan O’Brien while Willie Mullins has entered Riven Light. Glen Boss takes the ride on Riven Light, a winner in heavy ground in his native Ireland last month.
