Mediation to confirm promise of Newbury debut
The 3.10 at Ascot on Friday is a ten furlong maiden for three-year-olds and upwards with ten runners set to go to post.
Roger Varian saddles Mediation, a filly by Azamour out of a Winged Love mare. She was very easy to back on her debut at Newbury when drifting out to 16-1 but she must have delighted connections with her performance.
She was slowly away with Jack Mitchell and held up towards the rear before making her move up the far rail inside the final quarter mile. She gave valiant chase but could not reel in Carnachy, going down by a length and a quarter. The third horse was five lengths further back and both the winner and third had good form in maidens previously. Mediation need only make normal progress from her first run to get off the mark at Ascot.
Trevisani also caught the eye on his debut at the Berkshire tack for David Lanigan. He was also held up by George Baker and ran very green until realising what was required of him in the closing stages. Once Baker had switched him to the outside, he quickened well to finish a respectable fourth behind Heartless. He looks certain to improve and could be the biggest danger to Varian’s filly.
Michael Wigham is represented by Swashbuckling, a gelding by Raven’s Pass out of a mare by Polish Precedent.
He made his debut last week at Newmarket and was the subject of good support into 7.0. He ran on nicely without being knocked about by Andrea Atzeni to finish third to Persun. He had some experienced rivals behind him that day and is another worth keeping an eye on for the future.
Nosey Barker has been placed in three of his four starts for Richard Hannon but disappointed last time out at Ffos Las. He would have a chance on his run behind Alkawn at Newmarket in July and Tom Marquand takes off a useful 5lbs.
Sir Michael Stoute saddles Indian Monsoon, a colt by Monsun out of a Gone West mare. He finished sixth behind Mr Singh in a Newbury maiden back in April, showing enough to suggest that a race will come his way before the end of the season. Movie Set is the dark horse of the race, a Dubawi gelding making his debut for Saeed bin Suroor.
Mediation is the selection ahead of Trevisani and Swashbuckling in a typically strong Ascot maiden.
