Muatadel suited by conditions in finale – Doncaster 13/09/2017
The final race on the card at Doncaster on Wednesday is a wide-open five furlong handicap with sixteen runners.
Muatadel favourite for Doncaster finale
The clear favourite here is Roger Fell’s Muatadel, a four-year-old gelding by Exceed And Excel. He has won three of his seventeen races, including a win over six furlongs in soft ground in July. His ability to handle the testing conditions is a big plus and he lost nothing in defeat at Ripon last time. He was not headed until well inside the final 100 yards and was beaten half a length by Tarboosh.
Bogart is trained by Kevin Ryan and ridden by Tom Eaves. The eight-year-old has not won since 2013 but has been placed in some very competitive sprints. He has been placed three times at Thirsk already this season but was only sixth at Musselburgh last month.
Fumbo Jumbo has finished no worse than fourth in his five races this year for Michael Dods. He was placed twice in soft ground at Musselburgh and Catterick. Fumbo Jumbo finished fourth at the Scottish track on his latest start when carrying 9st 10lbs. The Zebedee filly has 5lbs less to carry on Wednesday and will be ridden by Paul Mulrennan.
Discreet Hero carries top weight at Doncaster
The weights are headed by Discreet Hero, trained by Simon Crisford and ridden by Andrea Atzeni. He won in soft ground at Yarmouth last month before finishing fourth at Epsom. He was held up that day and finished strongly. This more testing track should suit him but his weight could find him out in the ground.
Penny Dreadful won last time out at Catterick when beating Landing Night by three and a quarter lengths. The daughter of Piccolo has never raced on ground this testing and also has a 6lbs penalty to carry.
Paul Hanagan rides Suwaan for Ruth Carr, a gelding by Exceed And Excel. He has won two of his twelve races, most recently beating Jeany by a length and a half at Musselburgh. He made all the running that day on good to firm ground. He was beaten on his only previous start in soft ground. Somewhat Secret was third over six furlongs in soft ground at Haydock last weekend. He wore cheek-pieces for the first time and could be interesting over a shorter trip. He is yet to win in eight races.
