Newcastle United v Brighton Premier League Preview 30/12/2017
Struggling Newcastle United are at home to Brighton & Hove Albion in the EPL on Saturday.
The Magpies are in a poor run of form with just one victory in their last eleven matches. That came in a dramatic 3-2 win over West Ham just before Christmas. The win was enough to keep them out of the bottom three.
Newcastle welcomed long odds-on title favourites Manchester City on Wednesday evening. Rafael Benitez was unable to come up with another original, defending in numbers but falling to an inevitable defeat. The only surprise was that Sergio Aguero missed several chances to extend City’s lead before being substituted. Newcastle hardly created anything until the closing ten minutes but a point would certainly have flattered them.
Benitez will presumably put his team on the front foot for the visit of Brighton. The Magpies are just one point above the relegation zone. A win on Saturday could see them leapfrog the visitors in the Premiership table. There is virtually nothing between the two sides in terms of goals scored and conceded.
Brighton & Hove Albion
Chris Hughton’s side are in twelfth position at present but are only four points clear of the drop zone. They held Burnley to a goalless draw earlier this month before snatching a vital 1-0 win over Watford.
Brighton travelled to London to face Champions Chelsea where they held their own for the first period. Chelsea stepped up the pressure in the second half and were rewarded with goals by Morata and Alonso. The defeat would have been heavier but for some determined Brighton defending.
This is a crunch period for the Seagulls. Following their trip to the north east, they face Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and West Brom. Hughton will fancy his chances of picking up points in each of those matches. Brighton then face a return fixture with Chelsea on 20th January.
Brighton are rated 4.0 to take all three points on Saturday with Newcastle priced at even money. The draw is priced at 3.25 and makes most appeal. Newcastle’s tepid display against Manchester City suggests a determined Brighton will test them. Rafael Benitez has been seeking funds to strengthen his squad all season. He may get his opportunity in the New Year.
