Onefortheroadtom and Some Man clash – Worcester 14/11/2017

The 2.00 at Worcester on Tuesday brings together two exciting novice hurdlers in Onefortheroadtom and Some Man.

Expensive purchase Some Man makes hurdling bow

Harry Cobden rides Some Man for Paul Nicholls, a £165,000 purchase from Ireland. The four-year-old son of Beat Hollow won a point-to-point by five lengths in March, defeating two subsequent winners. Nicholls has elected to run here in preference to Ludlow on Thursday over a much longer trip. That suggests he feels the gelding may already need a proper test of stamina to bring out his best. He is certainly one to note in the early betting exchanges at Worcester.

The favourite is Onefortheroadtom, trained by Harry Fry and ridden by Barry Geraghty. He was also a point-to-point winner in Ireland and races in the colours of JP McManus. The grey son of Fair Mix travelled strongly throughout when winning on his first start for Fry at Exeter last month.

He beat the odds-on Lalor, the winner of a Grade 2 bumper at Aintree in April for Richard Wollacott. That gelding also looks to have a future over hurdles so the form stands up to close inspection. The one slight concern for supporters of the favourite is that he must concede 6lbs to all of his rivals on Tuesday.

Pulp Fiction has place claims at Worcester

The betting is dominated by Some Man and Onefortheroadtom with Pulp Fiction next best at 8-1. He is a gelding by Robin Des Champs and looks to have a future over fences. Pulp Fiction was third in an Irish point-to-point and filled the same spot in a Cheltenham bumper last month. He wore a hood that day and stayed on behind Brahms De Clermont.

Jonjo O’Neill saddles Ready And Able in colours more readily associated with flat racing, those of Messrs Smith, Magnier and Tabor. He finished over twenty lengths behind Onefortheroadtom at Exeter so needs to improve significantly. He was well placed until half-way before steadily dropping away.

Tom Bellamy rides Eau De Nile for Henry Daly, another National Hunt-bred son of Robin Des Champs. He was fourth of six here behind Shoal Bay in a bumper last month. Pointed And Sharp has shown very little in three races under rules for Philip Hobbs and has been unfancied on all three occasions. This looks like a fascinating duel between the front two in the betting with Onefortheroadtom just preferred.
