Queen Elizabeth II Stakes Preview – Ascot 21/10/2017

The 3.15 at Ascot on Saturday is the £1.1 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes over a mile.

Ribchester favourite for Queen Elizabeth II

The clear favourite here is Godolphin’s Ribchester, a four-year-old son of Iffraaj. He would probably be even shorter than 3.25 in the betting but for his shock defeat at Goodwood in August. He was beaten a neck by Here Comes When in very testing conditions. Ground as deep as it was that day can be a great leveller and Ribchester bounced back at Chantilly next time.

Richard Fahey’s colt readily held Taareef by three-quarters of a length in the Group 1 Prix du Moulin. He was a smooth winner at Royal Ascot in June following an emphatic win in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury. He certainly sets the standard here and will be ridden by William Buick.

Dual 2000 Guineas winner Churchill looks set to spearhead the Aidan O’Brien challenge in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. His winning run came to a shuddering halt at Royal Ascot when only fourth to Barney Roy. O’Brien did not risk him in the Sussex Stakes after the ground deteriorated and he has been beaten twice over ten furlongs since. His stamina certainly seemed to give out in the Irish Champion Stakes and he now reverts to a mile.

Beat The Bank up in class at Ascot

Stable companion Lancaster Bomber was second in the St James’s Palace Stakes. He has just one victory from 12 starts and was second on firm ground at Woodbine last time. The forecast suggests that he will not get fast conditions at Ascot on Saturday.

Beat The Bank steps up to Group 1 company for the first time for Andrew Balding. He has won five of his six races and was particularly impressive at Newmarket last month. The son of Paco Boy quickened clear to beat Sir John Lavery by five lengths.

Andre Fabre will be represented by Al Wukair, third in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in May. He was beaten by Taareet next time before beating Inns Of Court at Deauville. He had Thunder Snow back in third place that day, just a short-neck further away. Christophe Soumillon regularly rides the Godolphin colt who was second to Churchill in the Irish 2000 Guineas. He is closely matched with Al Wukair on Deauville form.
