Red Cymbal bids to defy 7lbs penalty – Chelmsford 07/12/2017

The 5.55 race at Chelmsford on Wednesday is a six furlong novice stakes for two-year-olds.

Red Cymbal partnered by Georgia Cox at Chelmsford

William Haggas has booked 3lbs claimer Georgia Cox to ride Red Cymbal. The Pivotal colt carries a 7lbs penalty for his recent win over course and distance. That is offset partly by Cox who replaces Daniel Tudhope in the saddle.

Red Cymbal was always prominent before going on to beat Fakhoor on his second start. He had Filbert Street seven lengths back in fourth place. Robert Cowell’s colt was making his racecourse debut but the extra weight he receives may still not be sufficient to reverse the form.

Callum Shepherd rides Choice Encounter for Michael Bell, a gelding by Choisir. He is yet to win in five starts and was gelded after finishing fourth at Windsor in June. Choice Encounter reappeared to finish runner-up to Drakefell at Lingfield over five furlongs and now steps up in distance. He also stayed on strongly when just failing to catch Last Voyage at Windsor in May and he could be dangerous if he gets the trip.

Mushtaq suited by shorter trip at Chelmsford

The reverse is true of Mushtaq who drops back from seven furlongs to six for Richard Hannon. He is a gelding by Zoffany out of a mare by Whipper and was fourth at Kempton on his debut. The Al Shaqab-owned colt faded badly in the closing stages so should be more effective at this distance.

Archie Watson saddles Arden Pearl, a filly by Swiss Spirit out of a mare by Oratorio. She has one victory from six starts, a three lengths win in a Windsor maiden in August. Watson ran her in a valuable auction sales race at Newmarket next time but she is more suited to this grade. Arden Pearl was beaten a length by Joegogo at Wolverhampton on her most recent start in November.

It is difficult to be too enthusiastic about the remainder. Grandfather Tom is a newcomer trained by Robert Cowell. Intriguingly, he does hold an entry in the 2018 Epsom Derby. He looks the stable number two behind Filbert Street but could be worth keeping an eye on in the betting exchanges. Eoin Walsh takes the ride on the son of Kheleyf who is out of a mare by Kyllachy.
