Rose Of Lancaster Stakes Preview – Haydock 12/08/2017

The feature race at Haydock Park on Saturday is the Group 3 Betfred Rose Of Lancaster Stakes over ten furlongs.

Laraaib put to the test in Rose Of Lancaster

The early favourite is the unbeaten Laraaib, a three-year-old colt trained by Owen Burrows. The son of Pivotal has won all three starts to date at Chepstow, Haydock and Ascot.

Laraaib was pitched into handicap company for his second start where he made light of a rating of 83 to beat Atty Persse. The runner-up went on to win impressively at Royal Ascot the following month. The handicapper put the colt up 12lbs for his next run at Ascot where be beat Banditry by two lengths. He is yet to race on soft ground and this is by far his toughest test to date.

Autocratic has not raced since beating Algometer in the Group 3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown in May. That was a big improvement on his previous effort at Newmarket but he has missed a number of engagements since. He has been well beaten on all three previous starts in going softer than good.

Pat Smullen aboard Spark Plug at Haydock

Brian Meehan has booked Pat Smullen to ride Spark Plug, a recent winner of a Listed race at Sandown. He ran on strongly to beat Kidmenever by a length and three-quarters on good to firm ground. He was subsequently taken out of a race at Newbury due to soft ground. Connections will be keeping a close eye on the forecast ahead of Saturday’s race.

Francis Of Assisi is well known to Australian racing fans. He won the Bendigo Cup and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes last winter, storming clear by ten lengths at Flemington. He looks as if he is being prepared for another trip to Australia but he would also need the ground to dry out by the weekend.

Mount Logan got loose at the start at Newbury on his last intended race and was withdrawn. The going had turned heavy that day and it may be that conditions will suit him better at Haydock. He was only a length behind Lord Yeats when third on good to soft ground in July. Gabrial is up in trip but has shown all of his best form at a mile. Frankuus was second to Defoe in a Listed race at Hamilton last time out but has ground to make up on Spark Plug from Sandown.
