Rum Runner well treated on handicap debut – Doncaster 13/09/2017

Race 2 on the opening day of the Doncaster St Leger meeting on Wednesday is a two-year-old nursery handicap over seven furlongs.

Crownthorpe raised 9lbs for Beverley win

Crownthorpe and Nobleman’s Nest dispute favouritism at around 5.5 in the early betting show. Richard Fahey trains Crownthorpe who got off the mark at the sixth attempt at Sandown just over a week ago.

The son of Monsieur Bond had been placed in four of his previous starts, notably when staying on strongly behind Go Now Go Now at Beverley in August. He confirmed the promise of that run when beating Puchita by three lengths next time. The handicapper has re-assessed Crownthorpe on a 9lbs higher mark at Doncaster.

Nobleman’s Best bids to bounce back from a poor display at York last month. He finished last of ten behind Sands Of Mali in the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes. That followed a victory in a novice auction stakes at Newmarket over six furlongs. Trainer Simon Crisford may have been flying too high with the son of Poet’s Voice who drops into handicap company.

Rum Runner makes handicap debut at Doncaster

Richard Hannon saddles Rum Runner, a winner over this distance at Sandown on his third start. He had run well on his previous outing when fourth to Qaroun on his first attempt at this trip. The son of Havana Gold makes his handicap debut and does not look harshly treated on a mark of 84.

Clive Cox is represented by Lethal Lunch, a grey son of Lethal Force out of a Pivotal mare. He won at Ascot in July over six furlongs before finishing fourth over this distance at Sandown. He was trying to concede 10lbs to Crownthorpe and is 9lbs better off with that rival on Wednesday.

Ollie Pears saddles recent Musselburgh winner Placebo Effect, a gelding by Lilbourne Lad. He will having his ninth race on Wednesday, winning three and being placed on three further occasions. He is admirably tough and consistent and could hit the frame again.

Ryan Moore rides top weight Ventura Knight for Mark Johnston, a colt by Casamento owned by Middleham Park Racing. He rattled off a hat-trick at Carlisle, Leicester and Ascot in the summer before the handicapper caught up with him. He needs to find improvement on his last outing when only fifth on the all-weather at Chelmsford.
