Scottish Sprint Cup Preview and Betting Tips – Musselburgh 17/06/2017

The highlight of the day at Musselburgh on Saturday is the £100,000 Scottish Sprint Cup at 3.10.

Caspian Prince tops the weights in Scottish Sprint

The race has attracted a maximum field of seventeen runners  headed by recent Epsom Dash winner Caspian Prince.

The eight-year-old was winning that valuable prize for the third time, each for a different trainer. He was quickly into his stride and took up the running with two furlongs to travel. He was all out to hold the flying finish of Dark Shot by a short-head. He carries a penalty for that success and meets Duke Of Firenze (third), Desert Law (seventh), Line Of Reason (ninth), Kimberella (tenth) on worse terms.

Duke Of Firenze is a past winner of the Epsom Dash and came within a whisker of a second victory. That followed a neck victory at York on soft ground last when holding Rasheeq. David Griffiths seems to have the eight-year-old in the form of his life and he will be difficult to beat.

Desert Law won impressively over course and distance in April so this is a logical target. Paul Midgley’s nine-year-old is as sprightly as ever and was less than two lengths behind the winner at Epsom. He may be disadvantaged by a low draw, on the opposite side of the track to Duke Of Firenze.

Murtagh claims 7lbs aboard Kimberella

Kimberella was far from disgraced at Epsom but has been beaten on both previous visits to Musselburgh. The handicapper may just have taken his measure, although Connor Murtagh’s 7lbs claim will help.

Line Of Reason, El Astronaute, Move In Time and Bowson Fred all finished further behind at Epsom and may struggle to reverse the form. The latter has plenty of early speed but has often flattered only to deceive in these valuable sprints.

One horse who is capable of landing the Scottish Sprint Cup is Orion’s Bow. He was just beaten in last season’s Stewards’ Cup and seems to have retained plenty of dash. He was forced to make his own running in a muddling race at Haydock last time. The fast five furlongs here should suit him better and Rachel Richardson claims a useful 3lbs. East Street Revue would have a chance on his best form but is drawn badly in stall one.
