Setting Sail makes debut for Godolphin – Leicester 12/09/2017

The 4.55 at Leicester on Tuesday is the British Stallion Studs Novice Stakes for two-year-olds over a mile.

Lynwood Gold carries 6lbs penalty at Leicester

The only previous winner in the field is Mark Johnston’s Lynwood Gold. The Mastercraftsman colt was driven into the lead on his debut at Epsom and ran on strongly to win by five lengths. That may not have been a particularly strong race but Lynwood Gold is already proven at the distance. A mile is quite a severe test for a juvenile at this stage of the season.

Ryan Moore rides market rival Morning Wonder for Kevin Ryan. He is a colt by Dawn Approach out of Mount Elbrus by Barathea. He made his debut at Beverley last month where he just failed to catch Codicil. Morning Winder looks certain to appreciate the extra furlong at Leicester and has to be respected.

Clive Cox and Adam Kirby have several runners with chances at Leicester on Tuesday. Their representative here is Ghazan, seventh on his debut at Salisbury. He faded in the closing stages to be beaten nearly ten lengths and needs to do a lot more here.

Setting Sail represents Godolphin at Leicester

Godolphin’s newcomers are always worth a second look and Charlie Appleby runs Setting Sail. He is by Dansili out of West Wind by Machiavellian. He has been given an entry in the 2018 Irish 2000 Guineas and will be partnered by James Doyle.

The famous blue silks are also carried by Future Score, trained by Saeed bin Suroor and ridden by Tom Marquand. He is by Cape Cross out of Theola by Kalanisi. He does not hold any future entries so the betting market may be the best guide to his prospects.

Andrea Atzeni rides Regal Director for Simon Crisford. He races in the colours of Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum and is by New Approach. His future entries include the 2018 Epsom Derby so he has presumably been showing signs of ability at home. Champion jockey Jim Crowley rides Starcaster for Hughie Morrison. The Dansili colt is also a Derby entry so connections will be hoping for some encouragement at Leicester. Lynwood Gold is likely to try to make all here but it may be worth opposing him with Setting Sail.
