Shady McCoy bids to defy top weight – Chelmsford 23/11/2017
The feature race at Chelmsford on Thursday is the seven-furlong handicap for three-year-olds and upwards at 7.30.
Williams seeks timely boost from Shady McCoy
It has been an up-and-down fortnight for the yard of Ian Williams. He landed the final big handicap of the turf flat season with Saunter, tipped at long odds by Aussiebet. On the same day, the progressive London Prize won the featured hurdle at Wincanton. Sadly, the latter suffered a fatal injury last weekend when contesting the valuable Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Williams runs one of his stable stalwarts at Chelmsford in Shady McCoy. The seven-year-old has won nine of his 37 races, including handicaps at Ascot and York this Autumn. The handicapper punished him for those victories by putting him up to 8lbs at Doncaster. Shady McCoy ran another terrific race, just failing to beat Speculative Bid.
He was put up a further 3lbs when returning to the all-weather at Lingfield last Saturday. He never saw daylight that day, his run being blocked by a wall of horses. That run can be safely ignored and he remains a leading contender despite top weight.
Gay Kelleway saddles Pastime at Chelmsford
The early favourite is Gay Kelleway’s Pastime, third to What’s The Story at Doncaster last time out. That was in a big field and followed a good second to Toy Theatre at the same track. The three-year-old is unbeaten in two starts on the all-weather and has to be respected under Josephine Gordon.
Luke Morris rides Show Stealer for Rae Guest, a four-year-old filly by Showcasing. She finished second to Related over six furlongs at Kempton in October. Show Sealer had finished third at Chelmsford over five furlongs and is not certain to be as effective over this trip.
Pearl Spectre won here recently from Miracle Garden but was beaten off a 6lbs higher mark next time. The gelding led early on and eventually finished fifth to Boy In The Bar. Silvestre De Sousa rides Qaffaal for Michael Easterby, a six-year-old gelding by Street Cry. He won four times during last season’s all-weather campaign but seems most effective over a mile. Jane Elliott rides Shyron for George Margarson who is well treated on his best form. He never showed with a chance last time and may struggle from stall twelve.
