Shergar Cup Challenge Handicap Preview – Ascot 12/08/2017

The 2.15 at Ascot on Saturday is the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Challenge Handicap over a mile and a half.

Mukhayyam chases hat-trick in Shergar Cup

A lot of interest in this year’s Shergar Cup will focus on Hayley Turner, out of retirement and a late substitute in the Girls team. Turner has decided to ride in France this winter where female riders receive a 4lbs weight allowance. The Shergar Cup fits nicely into her plans, allowing her to combine her media work with race-riding.

Turner has drawn a good mount here in Mukhayyam, a five-year-old gelding trained by Tim Easterby. The son of Dark Angel beat Mainstream at York on good to firm ground in July off a mark of 83. He then defied a 5lbs rise to comfortably beat Fleeting Visit at Ripon in soft ground. The handicapper has put him up a further 6lbs but he is clearly in the form of his life.

The early market leader is Niblawi, a five-year-old gelding by Vale Of York trained by Neil Mulholland. He ran a good race last time over course and distance when second to Royal Associate. He needed rousting along early in the race and Emma-Jayne Wilson provides the girls with a second live chance in the race.

Michelle Payne aboard Kapstadt at Ascot

Melbourne Cup winning rider Michelle Payne has the least fancied of the three girls’ rides here with Kapstadt. The seven-year-old was a fair seventh in the Old Newton Cup before reverting to hurdles. He ran with credit in third behind John Constable and should not be ruled out of calculations.

Jamie Spencer will be hoping to strike a blow for the GB & Ireland team aboard Gawdawpalin. The four-year-old won here last month when beating Red Galileo by a length and a quarter. That was his first start since being gelded and he is only 3lbs higher on Saturday.

Oasis Fantasy has been running better than his bare form suggests. He was third at York in testing ground in May and fourth to Mukhayyam at the same course last month. He then finished a close sixth to Fabricate in a very competitive affair at Goodwood. Oasis Fantasy is not an easy ride and Adrie de Vries will be on board.
