Shergar Cup Classic Preview and Betting Tips – Ascot 12/08/2017

The fifth race on the card on Shergar Cup day at Ascot is the Classic for three-year-olds over a mile and a half.

McEvoy set to star in Shergar Cup Classic

Kerrin McEvoy has an excellent chance to put a winner on the board for the Rest of the World team aboard Contango.

Andrew Balding trains the unbeaten son of Casamento and is in terrific form at present. He recently collected three prizes at the Goodwood Festival including the Group 1 Sussex Stakes. Contango has improved with each of his three races and bolted up by 11 lengths at Newmarket last month. He had won his previous start at Chester and readily shrugged off a 6lbs penalty. He has gone up 10lbs for his latest victory but goes well in the soft and looks the one to beat.

Michelle Payne rides Mister Blue Sky for Sylvester Kirk, a son of Royal Applause. He won over ten furlongs at Windsor last month but was well beaten her next time. He is a winner in the soft but his ability to stay 12 furlongs remains open to question.

Easterby saddles Appointed in the Classic

Tim Easterby has several fancied runners on the card including Appointed here. The filly beat Fengate over an extended ten furlongs at York last month. That followed a fair sixth behind the well handicapped Defoe at the same track. This will be her first run at a mile and a half with Alexander Pietsch in the saddle.

Hayley Turner has been given some promising rides including Hold Sway in the blue of Godolphin. He was having his first race since being gelded when fifth to Good Omen at Goodwood recently. The going was very testing that day and he is another stepping up in distance. The son of Dubawi looks the biggest threat to the favourite.

Kasperenko carries top weight for David Lanigan after winning in first-time blinkers at Doncaster. That was on good to firm ground and conditions will be very different at Ascot. He has only raced on good to soft once previously when third at Windsor over a mile. He should handle the ground and will be partnered by Adrie de Vries on Saturday.
