Shergar Cup Mile Preview and Betting Tips – Ascot 12/08/2017

The fourth race on the card at Ascot on Saturday is the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Mile.

Outside chances for Aussie riders in the mile

Kerrin McEvoy and Michelle Payne are both in action here aboard Nicholas T and Early Morning respectively. Nicholas T would have a chance on his third to Century Dream at Ayr in July but he ran moderately next time. He may well have found the straight seven furlongs too sharp here behind Stamp Hill.

Michelle Payne rides the popular grey Early Morning for Harry Dunlop. He provided Hayley Turner with a winner at the corresponding meeting but that was on much faster ground. He was last seen finishing one from last in the Royal Hunt Cup.

The warm favourite here is Breakable, a six-year-old mare by Firebreak trained by Tim Easterby. She beat Gabrial The Tiger by three-quarters of a length at Chester last week and arrives in peak form. Breakable was carrying 10 stone that day and is 9lbs lighter on Saturday. Umberto Rispoli takes the ride and will break from barrier one.

Hayley Turner aboard Examiner in Shergar Cup

Hayley Turner will be eager to get back among the winners as she builds towards a return to the saddle in France. Turner rides Examiner for Stuart Williams, a good handicapper on his day but well beaten in his last two starts on soft ground. He was second to Knight Owl in good to soft ground at Newmarket in April last year and is 6lbs better off with that rival.

Knight Owl will be ridden by Fran Berry for the GB & Ireland jockeys’ team. James Fanshawe’s gelding was also well beaten on his most recent start. Emma-Jayne Watson partners Manson for Dominic Ffrench Davis. Soft ground is also a concern for this gelding, a close fifth on faster ground at Sandown last month.

Brigliadoro has won three of his 32 starts but showed that he could go in the soft when second at Newbury in May. He followed that up with a good run at Yarmouth before finishing down the field in a competitive event at Newmarket. Both of those races were over seven furlongs and he could benefit for the step back up in trip. Anthony Delpech has drawn the ride on Brigliadoro and has each-way claims.
