Shergar Cup Sprint Preview and Betting Tips – Ascot 12/08/2017
The final race on the card on Shergar Cup day at Ascot is the Sprint over six furlongs.
Nobly Born favourite for Shergar Cup finale
Adrie de Vries has drawn the ride on favourite Nobly Born for John Gosden. The chestnut has yet to add to his novice victory at Yarmouth as a juvenile. He was runner-up in the Listed Rose Bowl at Newbury on his final start as a two-year-old.
Nobly Born reappeared at Windsor last month when third to Lahore before catching the eye in a competitive sprint at Newmarket. He finished fourth, beaten only half a length, behind The Feathered Nest in that £28k contest. The going was good to soft but and is a son of Mayson, a winner of the July Cup in bottomless ground. He should have no problems handling conditions at Ascot.
Golden Apollo also ran in the Newmarket race and finished ninth, just over three lengths behind Nobly Born. He won a £62k sprint at York in June and followed up with a good fourth at Newmarket. Fran Berry takes the ride for Tim Easterby and he should not too far away.
Lualiwa the main threat to Sprint favourite
Anthony Delpech rides hat-trick seeking Lualiwa for Kevin Ryan. The Foxwedge gelding had a length and a half to spare over Derek Duval at York over seven furlongs last time. Lualiwa showed that he could handle the soft when second to Battered at York in May. He looks the biggest threat to the favourite on Saturday.
Michelle Payne rides top weight Repton for Richard Hannon. The Zebedee colt has not raced since being well beaten at Redcar in October. Fitness has to be a concern but he has shown plenty of ability at a decent level. Hayley Turner will be hoping that the application of a hood brings about improvement from Private Matter. Richard Fahey’s gelding was seventh in the Newmarket race won by The Feathered Nest. That gives him a similar chance to Golden Apollo and he is a Listed winner in soft ground in France.
Smokey Lane finished last at Newmarket and is difficult to fancy. Neil Callan rides Goodwood Crusader for Richard Hughes. He rattled off five successive victories earlier in the season but the handicapper appears to have taken his measure.
