Shergar Cup Stayers Handicap Preview – Ascot 12/08/2017

The second race on the card at the Shergar Cup on Saturday is the Stayers Handicap over two miles.

Swashbuckle favourite to continue Balding run

The early favourite here is Andrew Balding’s Swashbuckle, a four-year-old gelding by Dashing Blade. He has won three of his eleven races, most recently beating Sternrubin by half a length at Salisbury in June. The handicapper has put him up 6lbs for that success and Neil Callan has the ride.

Byron Flyer looks his biggest danger for Ian Williams with Alexander Pietsch in the saddle. The six-year-old winning hurdler is turning into a useful stayer on the flat. He ran on strongly when just failing to catch Jaameh at Newmarket in June. Byron Flyer then went to York and this time when down to Theydon Grey by a neck. He is tough and consistent and has won on a variety of surfaces.

Hayley Turner rides stable companion Wolfcatcher, a five-year-old gelding by King’s Best. He has won three of his seventeen races and was formerly owned by Godolphin. He was not disgraced at Ascot last month when fifth to the progressive UAE King in the Brown Jack Handicap.

McEvoy rides Gavlar in Shergar Cup Stayers

Kerrin McEvoy rides Gavlar here for William Knight. The six-year-old gelding has five career wins from 36 races. He finished a long way behind Wolfcatcher last time and is difficult to fancy on that form. He had been beaten less than five lengths in the Northumberland Plate on his previous outing.

Angel Gabrial has finished second in his last two races for Richard Fahey. The 2014 Plate winner has been in the grip of the handicapper for some time but goes well with cut in the ground. Umberto Rispoli rides Angel Gabrial with Jamie Spencer aboard the hat-trick seeking Berrahri.

John Best’s six-year-old has won his last two starts at Epsom and Chester. He led a mile from home at Chester and should be prominent in the early stages here. He is up 6lbs for his recent victory but should still be competitive. Graceland was beaten a neck by London Prize at Newcastle last month. That was a good effort from Michael Bell’s grey mare who will be partnered by Keita Tosaki.
