Sizing Tennessee due a change of fortune – Ascot 24/11/2017
Ascot stages a good quality National Hunt card on Friday with the action getting under way at 1.00.
Johnson aboard Sternrubin in Ascot opener
The opening race is a novice chase for four-year-olds and upwards with a disappointing turn-out of just four runners. Official ratings suggest that Sternrubin is the one to beat for Philip Hobbs and Richard Johnson.
The six-year-old son of Authorized has won six of his 24 races and is currently rated 143 over hurdles. In 2015 Sternrubin won the valuable Ladbroke Hurdle here at Ascot when dead-heating with Jolly’s Cracked It. He again showed his liking for this venue when winning the William Hill Hurdle in October last year.
Connections reverted to the flat last summer and were rewarded with victories at Windsor and Ffos Las. He may struggle to win handicap hurdles off his present mark and he embarked on a chasing campaign at Exeter last month. Sternrubin showed a tendency to jump to his right but was still only beaten two lengths by Yanworth. He will be suited by a return to his favourite track.
Sizing Tennessee the danger to favourite
Colin Tizzard’s Sizing Tennessee looks a big threat if he can get his jumping together. The nine-year-old blundered away his chance at Cheltenham in March and was eventually pulled up. He showed what he was capable of when chasing home the useful Black Corton at Newton Abbot in October. He looked set to reverse the form with that rival when falling at the second last next time. The distance of two and a quarter miles is probably on the sharp side for him but he travels well in his races.
Dolos makes his chasing debut for Paul Nicholls after a disappointing run in the William Hill Hurdle at Ascot. The French import had run well behind Silver Streak at Chepstow last month but faded out of contention at Ascot. He is only a four-year-old but the French-bred National Hunt horses mature at an early age.
The field is completed by Dalkadam for John Jenkins, a six-year-old grey by Martaline. His form suggests that he will be outclassed here, although he was consistent in lower grade hurdles last season.
