Tartan Trophy Handicap Preview and Betting Tips – Musselburgh 17/06/2017
It is the richest day’s racing of the year at Musselburgh on Saturday featuring the Scottish Sprint Cup. A consolation race for those horses balloted out of the main event takes place at 2.05 with the £40,000 Tartan Trophy.
Rasheeq tops the weights at Musselburgh
The weights are headed by Rasheeq who carries 9st10lbs for Tim Easterby and Rachel Richardson. The four-year-old caught the eye last time out at York when running on strongly behind Copper Knight. He was beaten only a length and a quarter at the finish of that five furlong event. He does tend to run his best races from off the pace and Musselburgh is quite a sharp track.
Easterby also saddles Excessable, a four-year-old gelding by Sakhee’s Secret. He won at Thirsk and Redcar before running in the Epsom Dash earlier this month. He lost his place at a vital stage during the race before staying on again at the end. Excessable was just over four lengths adrift at the line so that was a decent effort. He has gone up a further 2lbs here but is well drawn in stall fifteen.
Richard Fahey’s Paddy Power won at Newmarket last month on good to soft ground. He was outpaced next time on a faster surface at Epsom and the ground seems to be going against him.
Graham Lee rides Olivia Fallow at Musselburgh
Fast Track rarely runs a bad race and has been third in his last four races for David Barron. They were all on all-weather tracks and he was well beaten at the corresponding meeting last year. Straightothepoint is a five-year-old gelding by Kyllachy trained by Bryan Smart. He would have a chance on his second to Explain at Ripon but he was last of six next time.
Stanghow was runner-up to Lucky Beggar at Catterick earlier this month for Antony Brittain. He needs to find further improvement if he is to add to his four career victories. Graham Lee has been booked to ride Olivia Fallow for Paul Midgley. The five-year-old ran an almost identical race to Excessable at Epsom last time out.
She was hampered on the stands’s rail at a crucial stage before running on behind Caspian Prince. She was only beaten four lengths at the line and is closely matched with Excessable on earlier form.
