Thousand Guineas Preview and Betting Tips – Caulfield 14/10/2017
Only eight fillies are set to face the starter in this Saturday’s $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield. While it is the smallest field assembled for the race in over 30 years, it is certainly not lacking in quality.
Alizee hot favourite for Thousand Guineas
The James Cummings-trained Alizee is hot favourite for the race following her victory in the Group 1 Flight Stakes over 1600m. She confirmed Tea Rose Stakes form with runner-up Champagne Cuddles, extending her advantage by a length. She has been handed a perfect draw in barrier two for the Thousand Guineas and Glyn Schofield retains the ride.
The Godolphin filly has really blossomed since stepping up in trip. The daughter of Sepoy was a close fourth to Formality at Randwick in early September over six furlongs. She looked as though she was crying out for a trip that day and has not looked back since. Guelph in 2013 and Global Glamour last year both came on from the Flight Stakes to win this race.
Shoals supported for Thousand Guineas win
Her main market rival is Shoals who has attracted support from 5.00 in to 4.20. She finished second to Booker in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude a fortnight ago. Shoals is a daughter of Fastnet Rock trained by Anthony Freedman and ridden by Mark Zahra.
Shoals renews rivalry with Booker who has been drawn in the outsider barrier. Booker will be attempting to emulate Irish Lights who completed the Prelude – Thousand Guineas double in 2009 for David Hayes.
Bookmakers Ladbrokes price the remaining fillies at 12.0 or higher to pull off a shock victory. That brings in the Darren Weir-trained Leather’n’Lace, third in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes at Flemington last Saturday. Damian Lane’s mount was a heavily backed favourite but had to settle for third place behind Bring Me Roses. She was an easy winner of a Conditions race at Caulfield at the end of September.
New Zealand-bred Aloisia finished fifth behind Leather’n’Lace that day and it is difficult to see her turning the tables. She is by Azamour out of Queen Boudicca by Perfectly Ready and will be ridden by Luke Nolen. She’s So High and Mintha break from five and six respectively with rank outsider Pure Scot completing the field.
