This year’s Tour Down Under has an interesting mix of stages to suit many different riders. We start with some fast, flat finishes that will have the sprinters interested before heading into the hills that will decide the outright winner. Let us talk you through what you can expect from each day’s action.
Stage 1 – Tanunda -Tanunda
A sprint stage in the Barossa that sees riders travelling through Seppeltsfield, Greenock, Nuriootpa, Angaston and Tanunda for three laps over a distance of 144km.
Stage 2 – Norwoord – Lobethal
This stage heads for the Adelaide Hills and is over 141.6km, including three 35km loops and two climbs at Fox Creek before a finish in Lobethal.
Stage 3 – Tea Tree Gully – Campbelltown
This 145.3km stage starts with a climb in Tea Tree Gully but ends with another fast finish down Gorge Road and into Campbelltown. It’s another chance for the sprinters to take a stage win unless a breakaway has the legs to stay away.
Stage 4 – Murray Bridge – Port Elliot
Riders will cross Murray Bridge before the only climb of the stage at Gemmell Hill. This is again a fast finish to the line but includes an uphill section at Port Elliot towards The Strand, which could make things interesting.
Stage 5 – Christies Beach – Willunga Hill
This 129.3km stage sees riders climbing Willunga Hill twice as the GC contenders come to the fore. A start at Christies Beach then sees riders heading around McLaren Vale on two occasions. The first climb of Willunga brings the chance of King of the Mountain points before the climbers then set sights on a stage success the second time around.
Stage 6 – Unley – Mount Lofty
A crucial day that could decide this year’s overall winner. The riders head out for 128.2km tackling a climb at Windy Point before heading through Mylor, Aldgate, Uraidla, Stirling, Crafers, and Bridgewater. Riders climb Mount Lofty twice, with the second push set to decide the stage winner and maybe overall victor for 2024.
Bookmakers don’t only price up the outright markets, they will also have odds available for each day’s racing. Here you can bet on who you think will win today’s stage of the Tour Down Under. We will put the spotlight on a certain rider each day so be sure to check back.
Jay Vine will not defend his Tour Down Under title in the 2024 race. The 27-year-old Australian claimed victory in 2023 when finishing ahead of Brit challenger Simon Yates but has decided on a European start to his year of racing.
Yates, however, has confirmed his participation and will be keen to go one better this time around if holding off the challenge of Ineos’s Filippo Ganna or even UAE’s Diego Ulissi. Another who has announced his participation is France’s former world champion Julian Alaphilippe for Soudal Quick-Step.
All could be suited by a gruelling final two days that see the iconic climb of Willunga Hill return on the penultimate day before a final-stage summit finish on Mount Lofty.
While the late stage will appeal to the climbers, there will still be a chance for the sprinters early in the six-day event. The opening few stages should suit Aussie sprint star Caleb Ewan as he looks to add a 10th stage victory at his home tour.
