Wiesberger back to his best for Open de France
The European Tour is in Paris this week for the Open de France at Le Golf National.
The reigning champion is Graeme McDowell who is seeking a hat-trick in the French capital. His form this season has been patchy at best and even odds of 26.0 make little appeal. He reeled in Kevin Stadler from eight shots back on the final day in 2014 but it will be a surprise if he can recapture that kind of form.
A more likely contender this week is Richie Ramsay of Scotland, already a winner in Morocco this year. He has been very consistent since, missing only one cut and he has been right in the thick of it in China, Spain, Ireland and Austria. He had a great chance of winning at Royal County Down but slumped to a closing round of 77. That seemed to be on his mind the following week in Austria where he carded a 74 in his opening round before rallying to finish tied for eleventh.
He was just one shot off the lead here in 2011 but the wheels came off again, this time with a round of 76. He can gain from those experiences and odds of 31.0 don’t look too bad for a player who loves these conditions.
The betting is headed by Francesco Molinari with Jamie Donaldson and Lee Westwood close up. The enigmatic Martin Kaymer is next up at 26.0, odds which would look very tempting but for his recent struggles.
Thongchai Jaidee was third here last year and has finished runner-up in the BMW and in the True Thailand Classic this year. He did not feature in the Nordea Masters or the US Open but was tenth in Ireland and tied for eleventh last week. Robert Karllson of Sweden was also in the frame last year but his recent form offers little encouragement.
Bernd Wiesberger has finished runner-up twice as well as two more top four finishes this year. He lost his way a little after the disappointment of finishing second in Ireland but made the top thirty in the BMW.
Our long shot for this event is Michael Hoey. He is priced at 101.0 despite finishing seventh in his last event. He played well here in 2014, finishing seventh. He could give us a run for a money.
