Windsor Castle Stakes Preview and Betting Tips – Royal Ascot 20/06/2017

The final race on the opening day of Royal Ascot 2017 is the Windsor Castle Stakes for two-year-olds at 5.35.

Wesley Ward targets Windsor Castle Stakes

Wesley Ward is sending over another strong team from America this year and has entered Elizabeth Darcy and Nootka Sound.

Elizabeth Darcy is a daughter of Camacho out of a Pivotal mare and won by seven lengths on her only start in the States. That form is impossible to tie-in with the English and Irish juveniles but she is obviously a speedy sort. Nootka Sound has an almost identical profile having won her only start by five lengths at Keeneland. She is by Lonhro out of a mare by Empire Maker.

Tom Dascombe is also doubly represented with Dragons Tail and Magnus. The former won comfortably at Chester on his second start, defeating Auntie Pam by four and a half lengths. Magnus  was a narrow winner on soft ground at Wetherby on his third start.

Mokaatil the each-way value in Windsor Castle

Aidan O’Brien has decided to run Declarationofpeace here with Murillo taking his chance in the Coventry. Declarationofpeace is a colt by War Front out of a mare by Storm Cat. He was beaten on his debut at Navan in April before winning by six lengths at Dundalk. It is difficult to assess all-weather form but he clearly possesses plenty of speed.

Corinthia Knight was beaten over three lengths by Frozen Angel here last month following two impressive victories. Godolphin’s best hope could be Roussel, a novice winner at Leicester on good to soft ground. He is trained by Charlie Appleby and is by Kodiac out of a mare by Noverre. Roussel is preferred to Sound And Silence who was a disappointing fourth of five last time.

Owen Burrows does not waste money on entry fees and it may be significant that Mokaatil runs here. The colt came up against a smart performer in Nine Below Zero on his debut at Salisbury. He showed signs of greenness that day and should improve for the experience.

Another Batt easily landed the odds in a poor race at Ripon last time. That was his first run for the George Scott stable and Silvestre De Sousa retains the ride in the Windsor Castle.
