Zetland Stakes Preview and Betting Tips – Newmarket 14/10/2017

The opening race at Newmarket on Saturday is the Listed Zetland Stakes for two-year-olds over ten furlongs.

Johnston chasing sixth Zetland Stakes win

This race has been won by some high class juveniles in the past. St Leger winners Bob’s Return (1992) and Silver Patriarch (1996) and Ascot Gold Cup winner Double Trigger (1993) are on the roll of honour. Mark Johnston trained Double Trigger and won with his full-brother Double Eclipse in 1994. Trigger Happy followed in 1997 and Empire Day in 2006. He also saddled Hartnell to win in 2013, now one of the top stayers in Australia. Twice Over won this race for the late Sir Henry Cecil in 2007 and would go on to win the Champion Stakes twice.

Johnston saddles Dee Ex Bee on Saturday, the winner of a conditions race in heavy ground at Epsom last time. The son of Farhh was an impressive maiden winner at Goodwood before disappointing in the Acomb Stakes at York.

This race has largely escaped the notice of Aidan O’Brien who is yet to train the winner. He has the top rated Kew Gardens in the field this time, a son of Galileo. He was runner-up to Nelson in a Group 3 at Leopardstown before finishing fourth in a Group 2 at Naas.

Gosden doubly represented in Zetland Stakes

John Gosden runs Graffit Master and Westerland, ridden by Robert Havlin and Frankie Dettori respectively. The former beat Baileys Excelerate over this trip on the all-weather at Kempton. The runner-up ran well in midweek and the pair finished five lengths clear of the third.

Westerland is a son of Frankel and has won two of his six races. He just got the better of Regimented last time over a mile at Doncaster and looks a thorough stayer. Richard Hannon’s Albishr would have an excellent chance if reproducing his Salisbury run behind Mildenberger. He was no match for the impressive Elarqam last time in the Group 3 Somerville Stakes at Newmarket.

The blue of Godolphin will be carried by recent course winner Rastrelli, trained by Charlie Appleby. He has won his last two races, most recently off a handicap mark of 85. He needs to do more here but cannot be discounted. John Quinn’s Musselburgh winner Dubai Empire completes the line-up.
