Super Rugby Teams

Written by Chris Flavell Last time updated 24/01/2025

Super Rugby is the southern hemisphere’s biggest rugby union club competition and sees some of the world’s biggest stars compete. It involves teams from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and other Pacific Islands.

It has previously included teams from Argentina, Japan, and South Africa. Let us explain more about those taking part in 2025.

How Many Super Rugby Teams Are There?

There are 11 teams playing in Super Rugby, also known as Super Rugby Pacific, for the 2025 season. These teams compete in a traditional league structure over a 19-week period from February to June with the top six making it through to the play-off phase.

This involves a quarter-final with the highest-ranked teams in the top six playing the lowest-ranked. For example, the team finishing first would host the team finishing sixth and so on. The highest-ranked team to make the Super Rugby final gets to host the showpiece event.

The 2025 campaign sees the number of teams reduced by one after Rugby Australia shut down Melbourne Rebels after a period of financial difficulties that saw the club placed into administration.

Where Are The Super Rugby Teams From?

The current Super Rugby teams hail from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and the Pacific Islands. While rugby union teams from Argentina, Japan, and South Africa did take part in the past, this is no longer the case.

There are now four teams from Australia, five from New Zealand, one from Fiji, and one team that represents the Pacific Islands. Each team is based in different cities. Moana Pasifika, the team that represents the Pacific Islands, is run by New Zealand Rugby and based in North Shore, Auckland Region.

Australian Super Rugby Teams

There are now four Australian Super Rugby teams competing in the tournament after Melbourne Rebels was closed down. This means the hopes of an Australian side lifting the Super Rugby title once more rests with the Brumbies, Waratahs, Reds, and Western Force in 2025.

An Australian-based team has not won Super Rugby since the Waratahs secured the trophy in 2014. That was the first and only win for the Waratahs. The Reds have also lifted the title once in 2011 and the Brumbies are the most successful Australian Super Rugby side with two wins back in 2001 and 2004. Here at AussieBet – the place for everything you need to know about online betting Australia – we have rounded up a little about each of the home teams.

ACT Brumbies

The Brumbies, based in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), have been Australia’s best-performing Super Rugby team in recent seasons and have also won the most Super Rugby titles out of the Australian-based clubs. It will be no surprise to see them listed as the shortest price of the Aussie teams with top betting sites ahead of the next season.

Formed in 1996, the team lifted the Super Rugby trophy in 2001 and 2004 and is probably Australia’s best hope of taking the title once again, especially with a host of Wallabies players in their ranks.

The Brumbies play in blue, white and gold and play home games at Canberra Stadium in Canberra. They have been runners-up on four occasions. They ended the 2024 season in 3rd place when losing to the Blues in the semi-finals.

NSW Waratahs

The Waratahs represent New South Wales (NSW) in Super Rugby and have one title to their name, which they captured in 2014.

The Waratahs play their home games at the new Allianz Stadium in Sydney and will be hoping to make better progress after a disappointing 2024 season saw them finish bottom of the league.

Expectations will remain high due to the fact they have a number of top Australian internationals in their ranks as well and a forward pack that could do some damage.

Queensland Reds

The Queensland Reds are based in Brisbane and have one of the largest followings in Super Rugby. They have appeared in six semis and two grand finals over the years, winning their only title in 2011 when beating the Crusaders.

The 2024 season was filled with plenty of promise for the Reds and ended with a quarter-final exit. It means they will look to build on that in 2025 under coach Les Kiss and with plenty of talent in their ranks.

Western Force

Western Force are based in Perth in Western Australia and are the only Australia-based side not yet to land a Super Rugby title.

Their best-placed finish came in 2021 when they came third. That is the closest they have come to a Super Rugby grand final but 2024 did bring some impressive victories even if the general season proved a bit of a slog.

The challenge for them in 2025 will be to find more consistency and tap into the performances that saw them beat both the Crusaders and Reds.
