Useful Betting Strategy
Here at AussieBet, our cricket betting experts love to get stuck into Big Bash League betting. There are plenty of markets to choose from but the skill is finding a way to spot value in the latest BBL odds.
Below you will find some nice nuggets of information that should increase your prospects of turning a profit from Big Bash League betting, or at least help you spot a good opportunity in the market.
- Pitch Conditions: Some pitches favour pace bowling, others are better for spinners. Certain batsmen thrive on certain pitches too. The condition of the pitch is pivotal and it often pays to look back at previous matches to see the stats for bowlers and batsmen at certain venues.
- Head-to-Head Stats: It is often useful to look back at recent results between teams before having a bet. Some sides tend to struggle against certain opponents and checking out the head-to-head stats could reveal key battles that may be repeated.
- Current Form: As is the case in most sports, confidence has a massive influence on performance levels. If you are going to back a team or have a bet on a player to be top batsman or bowler, make sure to check their current form. If they have been playing well in previous matches then it bodes well.
- Team News – It can also pay to keep up to date with all the latest news from teams in the BBL. Knowing that certain players are set to miss out through injury can have a big impact on your bets. Other batsmen or bowlers could step up or a team may suddenly be light in the death overs.
So, the above advice should set you well on the way to making a profit from betting on the BBL. But are there any other Big Bash League betting trends that you need to look out for? Well, we think there are a number of things to keep your eyes peeled for and these BBL trends will further aid you in your quest for successful Big Bash betting.
- Look Beyond Big Stars – Like many domestic T20 Leagues around the world, success is often down to the home talent on display rather than the big-name superstars. Domestic players are sometimes underpriced in markets like a top bowler or top batsman compared to big-money buys. These Aussie stars often have an in-depth knowledge of Australian grounds and pitches to hand them an extra advantage.
- Don’t Shy Away from Underdogs – The BBL is a very competitive tournament and all the teams are capable of beating each other on any given day. Like all T20 cricket, results can often come down to fine margins in one-off fixtures. Don’t be afraid to back underdogs if their price represents value and you can spot an area in the opposition they could exploit.
- Home Advantage – In and around the Christmas period some teams can face long away trips in the Big Bash League. If you spot a team that has been winning at home and then faces a marathon journey for a match over the festive period, they could often be worth opposing.
- Still No DRS – Cricket Australia had been planning to finally introduce the decision review system but that is now currently on hold due to the pandemic. Teams won’t get a chance to review an umpire’s call until at least 2022/23. While this works both ways, it is still something to bear in mind when betting. A captain known for being good at using DRS won’t matter here.
Consider the New Rule Changes
A final trend to look out for is the impact new rules can have. BBL officials announced a set of changes ahead of the 2020-21 campaign, which are still in place now. These were the ‘Bash Boost’, ‘Power Surge’ and ‘X-Factor Player’ all added to BBL matches.
Below we take a quick look at the three new rules in greater detail, all of which could have an impact when it comes to betting.
Bash Boost is a bonus point given at the half way stage of the second innings in every group game. The team chasing will get the bonus point if they have made it above the equivalent 10-over score of their opponents from the first innings. If they don’t reach the target then the side fielding last takes the point.
Consider this element when betting on run-rates or batsmen that will be looking to go hard early.
The Power Surge sees the six-over powerplay reduced to four. The batting side will then be given the final two overs to be used at any given time after the 11th over.
This could see a very different approach to an innings and certain bowlers being targeted by the batting side. Knowing there are added powerplays to come should also be considered when betting on total runs scored.
The X-Factor Player element gives the chance for a team to use a 12th or 13th player if they wish. Teams are able to replace someone on the team that hasn’t bowled more than one over or batted a tthe 10th over stage of the first innings.
This wasn’t used that often when first introduced but that doesn’t mean there won’t be value to be had if you can predict a player that will be called upon and bet on them early in the player markets.
Big Bash League Betting Markets
Once you have selected your favourite Big Bash League betting site you will then have to decide on what market to bet on. Some Big Bash League punters like to keep it simple, betting on the outright winner or on the match result markets.
Shrewd punters like to cast their eyes over less well-known markets in search of value. Luckily for you, we will explain how all the most popular (and more obscure) Big Bash League markets work in our next section. Keep scrolling to find out more.
Before the Big Bash League begins in December you can bet on quite a few different outright futures markets. Everyone is familiar with the outright winner market but there are a few others you can bet on too. Below you can see some of the key outright/futures Big Bash League betting markets that you can bet on with the likes of Bet365 and Unibet.
Most Popular BBL Outright/Futures Markets
- Outright Winner
- Top Tournament Batsman
- Top Tournament Bowler
- Player of the Series
- Player to Hit Most Sixes
- Name the Finalists
Match betting markets are formed for every Big Bash League match throughout the season. Unlike soccer or AFL, the match betting market in the Big Bash League is two-way rather than three-way. You cannot bet on the draw, you can only bet on either team to win the match.
If a match ends as a tie in the Big Bash League after the end of 20 overs, a Super Over is played. Whoever scores the most runs in the Super Over wins. If it remains level after that, the team that hit the most boundaries during the match is declared the winner and bets are settled on the final result.
Totals Betting (Over/Under)
Totals betting on the Big Bash League is available from all of our leading betting sites, including Unibet and Palmerbet. You can bet on a number of different Totals Markets, including Total Runs, Total 4s, Total 6s, Total Run Outs and Total Opening Partnership. In all the Totals Markets you can bet on individual team totals or on the combined totals of both sides.
The way this market works is pretty simple. For example, if you are betting on the Total 6s market the bookies will nominate the number of 6s they think will be scored in a match. You bet on whether the number of 6s will be more (over) or less (under) than the amount specified by the betting site. Individual total runs markets for players are also available from Unibet.
The two key player markets that Aussie punters love to bet on for the Big Bash League are top team batsman and top team bowler. In the leading batsman market, you are betting on the player who you think will score the most runs for their side during the match.
In the top team bowler market, also well known as the top wicket-taker market, you bet on the player you think will take the most wickets for their side. If you are having a flutter on these markets make sure to check the recent form and also look at how batsmen or bowlers performed in previous matches against the same opposition.
If you think one player will do particularly well with the bat or ball then you can also back them to be the top batsman or bowler in the match. This pits them against the opposition players as well as those on their own team, but does mean the odds are bigger.
Other player-focused markets during BBL games include the player to hit the most sixes, player to be named man of the match, or predicting if they’ll reach a certain number of performance points.
In the current climate, lots of punters are partaking in fantasy betting on the Big Bash League. A number of our BBL betting sites cater to fantasy fans, including the likes of Draftstars. You need to pick a number of players every week and they score points based on their performances. The team you pick will compete against others from around the country and whoever scores the most points wins the top prize. You can check out the scoring system for the Big Bash League in our in-depth analysis Draftstars.
Strictly speaking, due to Australian law betting sites are not supposed to offer live in-play betting on their websites. However, most of our top Big Bash League betting sites do display live betting odds on desktop and mobile, you will just need to pick up the phone in order to get your bet on.
However, Palmerbet does not have any live betting available so if you are planning on betting in-play, they are best avoided. Both Unibet and Bet365 have live Big Bash League betting available over the phone. Check out our in-depth bookmaker reviews to find out more about live betting with our top Big Bash League betting sites.

Get the Best BBL Betting App – Try Unibet
Australian punters are becoming more and more mobile focussed and the percentage of people that bet on their phones is growing rapidly. This is why we think it is massively important that our Big Bash League betting sites put a lot of effort into designing high-quality mobile apps.
It is always nice to see a betting site app designed specifically for both iOS and Android, but even if that is not the case then bookies know they need to produce a quality web app that works well on all mobile devices.
The Unibet app has not taken any shortcuts in this department. You can download their iOS app from the App Store and it is 88.8 MB and requires iOS 11.0 or later. The Android app can be downloaded directly from the Unibet site, while users of other devices can bet with ease using the Unibet web app via their mobile browsers.
