NRL Teams
The National Rugby League (NRL) is Australia’s biggest rugby league club competition. Teams from across the country and New Zealand battle it out to be crowned champions each season. Let us explain more about those taking part in 2025.
How Many NRL Teams Are There?
There are 17 teams in the NRL with 16 hailing from Australia and one from New Zealand. Australian-based sides are from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, and the Australian Capital Territory.
The 17 NRL teams play 24 matches between March and October each year in a league format. The team that finishes top of the ladder will win the Minor Premiership title before the top eight teams then go head-to-head in a finals series for a place in the NRL Grand Final to decide the overall champion.
Given the number of NRL teams competing, the tournament throws up some exciting derby rivalries. The Sydney area hosts the South Sydney Rabbitohs, Sydney Roosters, Wests Tigers, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Cronulla Sharks, Parramatta Eels, Manly Sea Eagles, and Penrith Panthers. The Brisbane NRL derby is contested between the Brisbane Broncos and the Dolphins

NRL Teams List
Here is a list of the current NRL teams in one place. While some cities have plenty of NRL teams, New Zealand’s only representative is the New Zealand Warriors based in Auckland.
Most Successful NRL Teams
The most successful Australian rugby league team is the South Sydney Rabbitohs with 21 titles. Even though the NRL wasn’t formed in its current iteration until 1998, titles won before then are still recognised.
Next on the list are the Sydney Roosters and St George Dragons with 15 premiers. The Balmain Tigers, who along with the Western Suburbs Magpies formed the Wests Tigers in the current NRL, secured 11 titles before the merger.
Manley Sea Eagles and Canterbury Bulldogs have eight titles and Brisbane Broncos and Penrith Panthers have six, but have won the most titles in the NRL era with five. They are also the favourites with Australian betting sites to pick up a sixth title in 2025.
The only teams never to win a title to date are the Dolphins, Gold Coast Titans, and New Zealand Warriors.

What Is The Oldest NRL Team?
The oldest NRL club in the NRL is the South Sydney Rabbitohs, founded in 1908 at the start of the New South Wales Rugby Football League (NSWRFL). The NSWRFL was one of the predecessor leagues that would later become the NRL.
The South Sydney Rabbitohs, as they are now known, were initially founded as just South Sydney. They were formed a week before Eastern Suburbs, which is the team now known as Sydney Roosters. Those two are the oldest teams still in the NRL.
That said, the Roosters are the oldest club to continuously compete in the top tier due to South Sydney being excluded for a few years in the early 2000s.
Other club’s have been around a similar time but have either merged with others to form a new club since or compete at other levels.
The newest NRL team is the Dolphins, who became the NRL’s 17th franchise in 2023 when semi-professional side Radcliffe Dolphins were successfully granted a license to field a professional spin-off side in the NRL.
