Who are the Favourites to Replace Amorim?

Let us talk you through the main candidates to replace Amorim after the hierarchy at Manchester United decided his time as manager was up. There is a mix of both international and domestic names being linked to the role.

Enzo Maresca – 3.50 Fav with bet365

The Italian has just left Chelsea by mutual consent after a poor of run with a young squad at Stamford Bridge. He was previously Pep Guardiola’s understudy at Man City.

After that he spent time at Leicester City, where he won promotion from the Championship, before his move to Chelsea. He won the Club World Cup for the Blues in the summer but saw a noticeable drop off in performances once injuries hit inexperienced squad.

Darren Fletcher – 4.00

The former Manchester United and Scotland midfielder will take over as interim boss after Amorim’s departure and may be keen to stake a claim for the permanent position.

Fletcher knows the club well after coming through the academy on his way to making 340 appearences for the first team during his playing days. He is the current under-18 coach but his lack of experience could count against him.

Be aware that this market is for the ‘next permanent manager’ not just the next manager. The big difference here is that the manager in question must be a long-term replacement and not someone who comes in a caretaker capacity.

The fact he has been made interim boss does not mean you would have already won your bet. He will now need to be offered the job on a permanent basis.

Oliver Glasner – 5.50

The current Crystal Palace boss has caught the eye with the way he has built a squad with limited resources before leading the Eagles to FA Cup glory and European football last season.

He could be seen as a good option and someone that is already well versed on the demands of Premier League football.

Gareth Southgate – 8.00

The former England boss is out of work after stepping away from the national team after the Euros. He doesn’t have a huge amount of top-level club experience but has managed some of the Premier League’s top talent in his previous role.

He is able to adapt to different situations and could be seen as a steadying hand after yet more disruption at Old Trafford.

Xavi Hernandez – 11.00

The former Barcelona boss apparently held talks with United previously and is someone who does have experience at the top level as both a player and manager. He knows what it is like to carry the pressure of a big club and brings an attacking brand of football.

He won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup in his first season before he struggled as relationships broke down at the Camp Nou. He was keen to lead an overhaul that Barcelona might have struggled to finance but could get that opportunity at United instead. He was a previous favourite for the role before Amorim got the job.

Kieran McKenna – 15.00

Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna is always mentioned as possible option for the manager’s role at United. The Northern Irishman is a former assistant at Old Trafford but has gone out and gained valuable experience when leading Ipswich Town to promotion from the Championship.

However, it would be a big call to turn to someone with such a lack of experience leading a team as big as United, especially after he suffered relegation last term. That said, Ipswich have continued to do well in the Championship this season under his leadership.

Mauricio Pochettino – 15.00

The former Spurs boss is now managing the US national team ahead of this summer’s world cup. He has top-level club experience and has managed some of the Premier League’s top talent in previous roles.

He is able to adapt to different situations and could be seen as a steadying hand at Old Trafford and one that also brings an attacking style of play. That said, it could be unlikely he leaves his current role during such an important year.

Xavi Looks Value Bet

Former Barcelona manager Xavi looks a good price at 11.00 to be the next Manchester United boss. First of all, he is currently out of work and wouldn’t need to be pulled away from another club. He also showed he knows how to bring success at Barcelona and handle the pressures of a huge club that fights on many fronts. The other candidates at the top of the markets all have different question marks about them compared to the boxes he ticks. He was also a previous favourite for this role before Amorim’s appointment and had held talks before.
