Manchester United is searching for a new manager after the sacking of Erik ten Hag following a poor start to the Premier League season. The Dutchman’s future had been under question for some time so it is no surprise to see the best bookmakers in Australia already have odds on the next Man United manager.

As is always the case with United, a host of big names are being linked with the task of turning the Red Devils’ fortunes around. The best Australian betting sites all have a long list of odds on the next man to take the Old Trafford hot-seat now Ten Hag has departed.

Let’s first take a look at the top of the market. We assessed the top 10 names in the mix according to bet365 to be the next permanent boss, but be aware that prices can change should bets be placed or speculation in the press suggests one name is leading the race over another.

Who are the Favourites to Replace Ten Hag?

Let us talk you through the main candidates to replace Ten Hag after the hierarchy at Manchester United decided his time as manager was up. There is a mix of both international and domestic names being linked to the role.

Xavi Hernandez – 3.00 Fav with bet365

The former Barcelona boss has apparently held talks with United and is someone who does have experience at the top level as both a player and manager. He knows what it is like to carry the pressure of a big club and brings an attacking brand of football.

He won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup in his first season before he struggled as relationships broke down at the Camp Nou. He was keen to lead an overhaul that Barcelona might have struggled to finance but could get that opportunity at United instead. He has been made the favourite with bet365 after initially being around 6.00 prior to Ten Hag’s dismissal.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy – 3.50

The former Man United striker and former assistant to Ten Hag is now being considered as a possible replacement. He is actually the 2.25 favourite with Unibet to take over from his countryman but a best-priced 3.50 with bet365.

Van Nistelrooy was a fans’ favourite under legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson and learned his trade working his way through the PSV coaching ranks before leading the club’s first team to the Dutch Cup. He joined the United coaching set-up this season and could be ideally placed to take the top job now his mentor be moved on. He will get the chance to stake his claim after being handed the interim position while a permanent candidate is found.

One negative for Van Nistelrooy is his lack of big club experience and how close he has been to the current set-up under Ten Hag.

Be aware that this market is for the ‘next permanent manager’ not just the next manager. The big difference here is that the manager in question must be a long-term replacement and not someone who comes in a caretaker capacity.

The fact he has been made interim boss does not mean you would have already won your bet. He will now need to be offered the job on a permanent basis.

Julian Nagelsmann – 6.00

The Germany boss has shortened in the betting since Ten Hag was sacked and could be seen as a good option should he be willing to step away from national team management.

The 37-year-old has managed Hoffenheim, Leipzig, and Bayern Munich. He won the league title with Bayern and had an impressive win rate prior to his dismissal.

Gareth Southgate – 6.00

The former England boss is out of work after stepping away from the national team after the Euros. He doesn’t have a huge amount of top-level club experience but has managed some of the Premier League’s top talent in his previous role.

He is able to adapt to different situations and could be seen as a steadying hand after yet more disruption at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amourim – 8.00

The early favourite to replace Ten Hag at Old Trafford was Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amourim. The Portugese has led Sporting to two championship titles, three league cups, and one Portuguese Super Cup success in his time in Lisbon. He has since drifted in the betting to his current 8.00 price.

He has Sporting sitting at the top of the league once again and this could be seen as the perfect time for him to take on the huge challenge of the Premier League.

Kieran McKenna – 17.00

The shortest-priced domestic name already in a head coach/manager role is Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna. The Northern Irishman is a former assistant at Old Trafford but has gone out and gained valuable experience when leading Ipswich Town to promotion from the Championship last season.

However, it would be a big call to turn to someone with such a lack of experience leading a team as big as United, especially in European competition. That said, Ipswich have done okay at the start of the season considering the challenge and it would be a much-needed consideration to succession planning should he return to the club.

Xavi Looks Best Bet

Former Barcelona manager Xavi looks a good price at 6.00 to be the next Manchester United boss. First of all, he is currently out of work and wouldn’t need to be pulled away from another club. He also showed he knows how to bring success at Barcelona and handle the pressures of a huge club that fights on many fronts. The other candidates at the top of the markets all have different question marks about them compared to the boxes he ticks. If reports of talks between the club and Xavi are true then now is the time to take the price before it shortens further.
