He was last seen when losing successive fights against pound-for-pound great and former undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. However, Fury has comeback from long absences before and still ranks as one of the best heavyweights on the planet.
Arslanbek Makhmudov (21-2-0 – 19 KOs) carries a reputation as a heavy puncher and chalked up a host of impressive stoppages before having his run derailed but Agit Kabayal in 2023. He was last seen when he secured a wide points success over Fury’s fellow Brit Dave Allen at the end of last year.
Fury has show before he has many ways to win a fight. His battles with Deontay Wilder first showed his boxing ability and good footwork when he should have secured a points success in their first encounter, before he used all of his size and weight to stop the American in their second and third contests.
Fury should have too much for the Russia if he’s back to full fitness and he’s an opponent that will stand in front of him and look to trade. Expect Fury to pick his shots before going up the gears as the fight progresses. Targetting the body, as shown by Kabayal’s success over Makhmudov, could be a good option for the Brit.
However, given Makhmudov’s power, Fury could look to make it an easy night while getting much-needed rounds in the bag.
Backing Fury to bag some rounds, pick his shots and use his better footwork to stay out of the way of Makhmudov’s power shots could be the way to go. Fury has the ability to stop the Russia late on but a points win looks the best bet after his absence from the ring.
Makhmudov’s most likely route to victory involves him catching Fury with a knockout punch, probably early in the contest. If Fury isn’t as sharp as he was before his retirement then the danger will come in the openeing rounds against a heavy puncher like the Russian.
Makhmudov wasn’t able to stop Dave Allen in his most recent fight but did get through with plenty of shots. The longer the fight goes, the less likely it is that Makhmudov finds a route to the win.
A KO looks the best option for a Makhmudov win here. He won’t win enough rounds against Fury to take a decision so this really is the only bet worth considering for anyone who thinks the Russian can come out on top.
