Above you can view a list of the top Australian Tour de France betting sites as chosen by our panel. Among the things they considered were the quality of odds, the depth of Tour de France markets and additional features such as the quality of mobile betting apps offered.

Bet on Tour de France with Unibet

Unibet are long established as major players on the European betting scene. They have increased their market share in Australia in recent years too and you won’t find many better Tour de France betting sites Down Under. Licensed by the Northern Territory Government, Unibet has a good range of Tour de France markets available and their mobile apps are up there with the best in the industry too.

You can bet on all the main Tour de France markets with Unibet, including General Classification winner, Best Young Rider, King Of The Mountains and Top Points Scorer. Live betting on Tour De France is available as well, but you can’t place bets online.

Tour de France Odds

Remember, if you are going to have a bet on Tour de France it is imperative to get the best odds. Returns are directly impacted by the price you place your bet at. So, finding the best Tour de France betting odds should always be your number one priority if you want to maximise profits from winning wagers.

To learn more about the importance of finding the best Tour de France odds check out our odds comparison section below.

Tour de France Odds Comparison

We looked at the odds on offer from three leading Tour de France betting sites for this year’s race. As you can see, Unibet and bet365 had some of the best prices on the market.

We looked at the top 11 riders in the field but it is important to know others are available at much bigger prices. Also remember that prices will shift as the race nears, so checking the odds for movements is a good idea.

As you can see, shopping around for the best price can be worthwhile when looking to bet on some riders. A $10 bet with Unibet on young Danish star Jonas Vingegaarde would bring a return of $75, but if you placed that bet with Palmerbet you would only get $53 back.

Tour de France Betting Tips

Young French hope David Gaudu and Australian star Ben O’Connor could both prove value each-way picks in 2022.

Gaudu will be the main man again for Groupama–FDJ and looks a good each-play play at 81.0 with bet365, who are paying 1/4 odds for a podium place. The 25-year-old struggled with illness last year but recovered in time to show his potential across the closing stages.

There was also plenty to like about the 4th-place finish of O’Connor last year. He has been backed by AG2R Citroën and can look to mount a serious push for a podium place this time around at a huge 201.0 with bet365.

Those two could offer a good interest when the race hits the mountain stages and look too big compared to their chances of getting involved in a GC battle. Note that prices could shorten or grow as the race nears.

Betting Strategy

If you fancy having a bet on Tour de France you’ll have a good selection of markets to choose from. No matter what market you decide to go with, there are some key factors that should always be part of your decision-making process before you have a bet.

Below our Tour de France online betting analysts divulge some of their secrets for spotting appealing betting opportunities for the race.

  • Stage Profile: If you are having a bet on an individual stage you should always check the profile. Flat profile stages are more often than not dominated by a bunch sprint. Hilly stages are ideal for breakaway wins, while the mountain finishes usually involve the top climbers. There is no point in backing a sprinter to win a mountain stage, so make sure to check the stage profile before having a Tour de France bet.
  • Team Strength: When it comes to the General Classification (Yellow Jersey) battle and those key mountain top finishes, having a strong team around the team’s leader is key. Assessing the strength of a team and each man’s role will be key to victory. This is also the case for a sprint team’s lead-out men. Assessing the strength of a team and the roles they may play is a good way of spotting both overall victory bets and stage wins.
  • Watch For Wind On The Flat: As we stated earlier, sprinters generally dominate flat stages. However, on windy days it is possible for breakaways to escape so you should always watch the weather forecast to see if it’s blowing a gale. Cross winds can slit the peloton and had big advantages to strong breakaway groups.

Popular Tour de France Bets

Picking the correct Tour de France online betting market to bet on is one of the most important decisions you will make. It could be the difference between profit or loss and there is no doubt that finding Tour de France winners is a lot easier in some markets than in others.

You can check out below brief explanations on how some of the key markets for betting on Tour de France work.

Tour de France Outright Winners

The Yellow Jersey Winner (General Classification) is the most commonly bet on Tour de France betting market, but you shouldn’t discount some of the other outright options. You can also bet on the winner of the Polka Dot (best climber), White (best young rider) and Green (top points) jerseys. Win and each-way betting will be available for all classification markets with both Unibet and bet365. Both these bookies will have the tops markets priced up well in advance.

Stage Betting

All leading bookies that offer online betting on Tour de France will have stage betting markets available. Again, you can bet win or each way and most bookies pay out on 1-2-3 places at 1/5 odds, although you might get 1/4 odds with bet365.

As we mentioned earlier, the profile of the stage is massively important and you should always check who will be best suited by the course characteristics before having a bet on the stage winner market. Also, don’t forget to do the odds comparison test, since the prices can drastically vary depending on a bookie.

Match/Group Betting

If you are trying to figure out the most likely winner of a stage at the Tour de France it is far from easy. Group and match betting provides punters with an alternative option. The betting site groups sets of riders together (2,3 or 4 usually) and you bet on the rider that you believe will achieve the best finish on the stage.

The odds won’t be anywhere near as generous as in the stage-winner market. But if you are interested in placing Tour de France multis then combining match/group betting selections could be the way to go.

Tour de France In-Play Betting

The Betfair Exchange is the home of in-play sports betting in Australia. As it is an exchange and not a conventional bookie, the regulations in the Interactive Gambling Act that relate to in-play betting online do not apply. With bet365 and Unibet you can view Tour de France in-play betting odds online but in order to place a bet you need to make a phone call.

However, you can start with live online betting on Tour de France if you join the Betfair Exchange community. You can not only place win bets, you can also place lay bets to lose. So, if you think the race leader is going to blow up on the final climb, you can lay them to lose in-play on the Betfair Exchange. If you want to learn more about how the betting exchange works, check out our Betfair Australia review.

Live Streaming

Lots of punters would like to watch a live stream while betting on Tour de France, but unfortunately, none of our leading betting sites have it available for Australian customers.

At the present moment, none of our Tour de France betting sites had live streaming of the race available. But if these streams ever become available, it’s safe to say that some of the sites from the list above will have them first.

Tour de France Mobile Betting Apps

If you want to bet on Tour de France on your mobile device you’ll also be looking for a high-class Tour de France mobile betting app.

It is hard to look past either the bet365 or Unibet app for this. It is probably bet365 that just edges this particular sprint finish but both should be considered. The bet365 app has a great interface and is easy to navigate, with all the top sports and markets clear to find and bet on.

History and Records

Since it was first held in 1903 the Tour de France has attained iconic status. This famous bicycle race is one of the toughest events in any sport, with 21 grueling stages held over 23 days. They have to climb some seriously steep mountains and the stages can be hundreds of kilometres in distance. In case you want to learn more, note that all the data is readily available on the official site of Tour de France.

Four men have won the race on five occasions, Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain. Lance Armstrong broke that record in the late 90s/early 2000s but he was stripped of his wins due to doping.

Only seven Australians have worn Yellow Jersey at any stage during the race and Cadel Evans remains the only Aussie to win the General Classification outright. The other Aussies that have led the Tour de France are Phil Anderson, Stuart O’Grady, Brad McGee, Robbie McEwen, Simon Gerrans and Rohan Dennis. Hopefully, it won’t be too long until we see an Aussie in the ‘Maillot Jaune’ again!

Aussies have done even better when it comes to the Green Jersey, with McEwan’s three overall wins in 2002, 2004 and 2006 behind a highlight. Baden Cooke (2003) and Michael Mathews (2017) are others to have claimed outright victory in the Points Classification.
