Cox Plate Tips
Our racing experts are here to highlight their best bet for the Cox Plate. They will look into all the runners and assess all the latest form to give you a top tip for the race.
Come back closer to the contest to discover where they think the value lies this time around.
The Cox Plate is run over 2040m on turf at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne. This flat race offers prize money of $5m and is open to horses aged three and older.
As is the case with the Caulfield Cup, the winning horse in the Cox Plate is given exemption from the balloting process for entry into the Melbourne Cup. That said, only seven horses have done the double.
While considering tips is a good way to have an interest in the race, it is also good to try and spot your own idea of the winner.
Below we talk you through some key factors to consider when looking to find your selection:
- Look Beyond the Favourites: It appears that favourites do have an okay record in this race but it’s nothing spectacular. Eight favourites have won the last 20 runnings of the race. However, this drops to 4 out of 20 if you take out super mare Winx’s four successive wins from 2015. in fact, 7 of the last 20 winners have been double-figure odds.
- Age: While the race is open to horses from the age of three, it is four-year-olds that have the best win record from the last 20 runnings. Considering a horses age does look like a trend worth noting. Of the last 20 races, four-year-olds have won 7 times and six-year-old have come out on top on 6 occasions. However, five-year-olds have a poor recent record with just one win in the last 20.
- Barrier Draw: The draw a horse is given in the starting gate does have an impact on theior chances of winning. You should consider where a horse is positioned when looking to bet. Horses drawn between barriers 3 and 7 have provided 14 of the last 20 winners.
Cox Plate Markets
The best betting sites will all have markets for the Cox Plate. These will cover everything from winning odds right through to the winning distance.
Looking over the different markets is a great way to spot a good opportunity you can exploit if you think the bookie has got their price wrong.
Below we explain some of the most popular betting markets.
Futures betting for the Cox Plate is when you bet on the race weeks or even months from when it is due to take place. The advantage to this is that you are likely to get much bigger odds because the market is made up with a speculative guess of those that may line up.
If you are confident that this will be a horse’s target and that their price may shorten, the futures betting can be rewarding.
That said, it does come with risk compared to betting once declarations have been made. Futures markets are ‘All in’, meaning that you will lose your stake if your horse doesn’t run.
Win and Place betting is simply as the names suggest. You are just backing on a horse to win or be placed.
An each-way bet covers both of these and involves two bets in one, one part for the win and one for the place. This bet is double your initial stake but if your horse wins you get paid out on both parts of the bet.
Punters should also look around for favourable place terms. Some bookies will offer just three places, others four or even five depending on the size of the field.
It is also worth remembering that some betting sites will also offer you the chance to take the National Tote market as well (winning bets returned at the best price across all three Totes), which could be worthwhile for big-priced picks.
Another market that you will see with some Aussie bookies is the winning distance. You don’t need to name the winner, just how far they will win by.
This could be anything from a nose to over five lengths or more. These bets are popular if you think the favourites is likely to blow away the field, or if you think a tight finish is on the cards with the contest looking very evenly matched.
An exacta requires you to predict the correct order of the first two horses, while a Quinella requires you to name the first two in any order. A Trifecta needs you to correctly pick the first three home.
As you’d expect, these bets come with much bigger rewards but are also harder to land. Sticking to finding the outright winner can sometimes be hard enough.
Best Cox Plate Betting App
Another key feature to consider when picking a top Cox Plate betting site is how good their mobile betting app is.
Being able to check odds, place bets and watch live streams on the go from your mobile device is a huge plus point. Picking a well-designed app makes this experience even better.
We believe that bet365 has a great app for both Android and iOS. It’s is easy to get to grips with, especially if you are familiar with their desktop site, and has an excellent interface.
We talk more about their offering in our bet365 app review.

Best Live Streaming
Geo restrictions apply. You must have a funded account or have placed a bet in the last 24 hours to access. Under Australian law, we are required to inform you that Live Streaming on bet365 is exempt from Parts 3 and 4 of the Broadcasting Services (Online Content Service Provider Rules) 2018.
Cox Plate Live Betting
Live betting on the Cox Plate or other horse races is not possible with online bookies in Australia. The only way to place live bets on other sports is by doing so over the phone, but this still isn’t the case for horse racing odds.
The only way to start live betting, also known as in-play betting, is by signing up to the Betfair Exchange. You are not betting against a bookie so it does not come under the same regulations. Instead, you back or lay horses against fellow punters. We go into more detail within our Betfair review if this is something of interest.
While it may be hard to place live bets, it is still possible to watch live streams of the action. Having access to live Cox Plate streaming is another positive to joining a top bookie.
The best betting sites will off this to their customers as long as they have funds in their account and have placed a bet in the last 24 hours.
We have assessed the best sites for live streaming and this feature was a key criteria to be on our recommended list.
When it comes to online betting sites with this feature, it was bet365 and Unibet that really stood out. Another new option on the list is BlueBet, which allows you to watch live horse racing for free via Racing.com.
