SBW swapped the rugby field for the boxing ring to add the New Zealand heavyweight title to his dual-code honours but has always swapped heated words with Gallen, who himself switched to boxing after an illustrious rugby league career.
Favourite Sonny Bill Williams (9-1 – 4 KOs) heads here on the back of a TKO loss against Mark Hunt in 2022. Paul Gallen (15-2 – 8 KOs) beat Hunt early in his career but has also not fought since 2022 when he recorded a unanimous decision win over Justin Hodges.
However, just when it looked like this fight would never happen, it has finally been agreed for eight two-minute rounds in Sydney in July.
Speaking at the press conference for the contest, Williams said: “I’m gonna smash his face, simple as that.
“This type of character having a go at mine, I see that as a compliment. This is a bloke that loves to talk, and talk like he’s the toughest guy in the world. This is not how I like to be as a person, but he brings it out in me, how he carries himself is everything I dislike.”
Gallen didn’t attend the press conference but left a message for Williams when addressing his no-show. He said: “I feel like you’ve wasted my time the past 10 years. But finally, you built up the courage to jump in the ring with me. While I’m past my best we all know that I’ve still got enough left in me to beat you. I’ll see you soon champion.”

Kris Terzievski (13-1-2) will now face heavyweight Troy Pilcher for the WBA Oceania Bridgerweight and WBC Continental Bridgerweight titles.
Light heavyweight Clay Waterman (13-2) faces Kiwi Mose Auimatagi Jnr (16-4-2), while heavyweight Kane Baker (4-2-1) goes head-to-head with 2012 Olympian Johan Linde (5-2-1).
Cruiserweight David Nyika (10-1) returns following his defeat to Jai Opetaia to face veteran Kiwi Nikolas ‘The Greek’ Charalampous (23-6-2).
