Tips For Betting On Golf

No matter what the sport punters need an edge to make their betting pay and golf is no exception. Here at Aussiebet we consulted our golf experts to find out their best tips for betting on golf. There are a number of things that punters should take into account before parting with their hard earned dollars. Below you will find some of the most important factors you need to consider if you want to find those elusive golf winners.

Tips For Betting On Golf

  • Some courses are long and favour big hitters, while others put the emphasis on accuracy. So, always check your selections driving stats before you place your wager.
  • In racing the old saying ‘horses for courses’ often rings true and it is the same for golf as some players seem to relish playing on certain courses.
  • Keep an eye on weather conditions as some players love it when it is windy, while others do well when it rains.
  • Keep an eye on recent form and the world rankings as more often than not the cream will rise to the top in tournaments.
  • Odds can vary massively between bookmakers so shop around to get the best price possible.
  • Make sure to also check for golf promotions as you might find one that will boost your profits.

How To Bet On Golf

When it comes to the question of how to bet on golf, there is a lot more than just one answer. There is a plethora of options to choose from when you are placing your wager, and the simplest way is to back a player to win or each way in the outright market. The options available differ depending on the bookmaker. For example, Ladbrokes Australia allow punters to bet on who will be the leader at the end of the first round.

However, for Futures betting Ladbrokes Australia and also Crownbet are win only, while with Unibet Australia you can bet each way (5 places). Other ways to bet on golf include head to head betting where you bet on one player to outscore the other in a specified round. Some bookies have more markets than others, and we found that William Hill Australia are streets ahead in this department.

Best Golf Odds And Markets

With William Hill Australia you can place match bets that stand for 72 holes, 36 holes or 18 holes. They also offer handicap betting on golf, as well as betting on what the winning margin will be. You can also bet on the nationality of the tournament winner and also whether a play-off will be required.

You can also bet on the usual win or each way markets, though only win singles are accepted for futures betting on golf. Odds can vary widely from bookie to bookie too, so make sure to shop around to find the best price possible.

To illustrate the variation in odds we looked at the prices for the US Open which takes place in June. Dustin Johnson is the favourite with most firms and he can be backed at 11.0 with both Sportsbet and Palmerbet to win outright, whereas with Unibet Australia he is just 9.0. So, before you place your wager make sure to find the best odds available to maximise your potential winnings.

Where To Bet On Golf

Choosing where to bet on golf is not an easy decision as all bookmakers have negatives and positives when it comes to betting on golf. Some bookmakers pride themselves on providing the best odds and if you are searching for value, then you could do a lot worse than giving Sportsbet a try for your golf betting as they consistently offer the best odds for outright betting on golf.

However, for other bookmakers it is all about the range of markets they have to offer and in this department William Hill Australia come out on top. Also, lots of bookmakers now offer in-play betting on golf, so if your original selection misses the cut you can try again with another selection midway through the tournament. Bet365 also offer a decent amount of markets for betting on golf so punters have plenty of options to choose from.

Major Golf Tournaments – Golf Betting Opportunities

The Majors

The Masters

The four majors are the tournaments that every golfer wants to win and the first one of the year is held at Augusta National in April. The winner gets to wear the famous green jacket and they know that their place in golfing folklore is secured if they can win this tournament.

It is the only major that is held at the same course every year and in 2018 it was American Patrick Reed who lifted the trophy.  Adam Scott is the only Aussie to have won The Masters and this year Cameron Smith was the highest Australian finisher.

The US Open

First held in 1895 at Newport Golf Club in Rhode Island USA and it was won by Englishman Horace Rawlins. This is the second of the four majors held every year and David Graham was the first Aussie to triumph back in 1981 at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania.

He is just one of two Australians to have won the US Open, the other being Geoff Ogilvy at Winged Foot back in 2006. In 2017 unheralded American Brooks Koepka took the title at Erin Hills and this year’s US Open will be held at Shinnecock Hills and it starts on June 14th.

The Open Championship

The third of the four majors held annually is The Open Championship, also well known as The British Open. This is the oldest of the major tournaments, held for the first time in October 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland.

The venue changes every year and in 2018 it will be hosted by the Carnoustie Golf Club. This tournament has proved to be a happy hunting ground for Aussie golfers, with 9 Australian winners in total. The great Peter Thomson won it four times in total and Greg Norman lifted the famous Claret Jug twice. It starts on the 19th of July and it is always a tournament well worth watching.

The PGA Championship

The last of the four majors held every year in August is the PGA Championship. It was inaugurated in 1916 when it was a match-play tournament and it was won by Jim Barnes at Siwanoy Golf Club. It became a stroke play tournament in 1958 and America has dominated with 79 wins.

Australia is next best with 5 winners, including Jason Day who triumphed in 2015 at Whistling Hills. Other Australians that have won this major include Steve Elkington (1995), Wayne Grady (1990) and David Graham (1979). In 2018 the tournament will be hosted by the Bellerive Golf Club and it starts on August 9th.

Team Tournaments

The Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup is held every two years with venues alternating between USA and Europe. It sees the best golfers from the USA and Europe battle it out over three days in a number of disciplines. These include foursomes, fourballs and the singles on the final day. Sometimes it isn’t necessarily the highest ranked golfers that win this tournament as match play golf requires a different mindset to playing in regular tournaments.

The Ryder Cup was originally between the USA and Great Britain and Ireland, but European golfers were invited to participate for the first time in 1979. The USA have won 26 Ryder Cups since it was first held in 1927 and Europe (and GB and Ire) have won 13 with two Ryder Cups finishing level. The USA won 17-11 in 2016 and this year the fun starts at Le Golf National in France on 28th September.

The Presidents Cup

This is another bi-annual team golf match play tournament that pits America’s best golfers against the best of the rest of the world (excluding Europe). It was first held in 1994 but due to the September 11th tragedy it is now held in even numbered years. In 2017 it was held in Jersey City USA and in 2019 it is coming back to Australia.

Royal Melbourne Golf Club will host the 2019 Presidents Cup and the team captains will be Tiger Woods and Ernie Els. The International team will be selected from the top 10 in the World Rankings as well as two captain’s picks. In 2017 the USA won 19-11 and they have failed to win it on just one occasion (1998).  Jason Day, Marc Leishman and Adam Scott will likely feature in 2019.
